One week before the Delhi municipal corporation polls next week, senior Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries and Union Ministers hit out against the Aam Aadmi Party while campaigning across the capital on Sunday with jibes ranging from ‘massage centre in Tihar jail’ to ‘revri culture’.
On Sunday morning, BJP national president J P Nadda led a door-to-door campaign in North Delhi’s Wazirpur Industrial Area accompanied by BJP MP Harsh Vardhan. Addressing a public meeting in the area after that, Nadda tore into the AAP, referring to the incarceration of leaders including cabinet minister Satyendar Jain and to leaked video footage showing Jain receiving what appeared to be a massage in his cell.
“Is Satyendar Jain in jail or not? Is he in jail for the last six months or not? They (AAP) used to say we only give tickets to honest people. Is Amanatullah Khan in jail or not? For what? For causing riots. Is Tahir (Hussain) in jail or not for the past year? For what? For causing riots. And is Satyendar Jain in jail for corruption or not? Hasn’t he asked for bail six times? He hasn’t got bail?… Now tell me if they have improved health services. They haven’t? Arey, he has opened a massage centre in Tihar jail. And they have done so much work in education that they have made a rapist a therapist,” he said.
Nadda was referring to AAP’s explanation that Jain was receiving physiotherapy, to which sources at Tihar jail had stated that the masseur was not a physiotherapist but an undertrial prisoner in a rape case.
Calling AAP a party which “works against common people”, Nadda said, “They denied releasing around Rs 3,200 crore to the municipal corporation… You might have heard them saying ‘hum kattar imandar hai’. They turned out to be such kattar imandar that the commission of liquor contractors had increased from 2% to 12% and from that 12%, they took 6% for themselves. You tell me, didn’t Kejriwal say that he would stop liquor thekas? Has he had thekas opened in your locality? Made it reach your homes? This means that they work against what they used to say.”
Throughout the day, several senior BJP leaders including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Hardeep Singh Puri and Giriraj Singh led multiple door-to-door campaigns and public meetings across different parts of the city.
Addressing a public meeting at Jangpura, Puri stated that the same party should be at three levels of government for development work.
“There are two models of development in front of us. One is Modiji’s model which wants that Delhi be recognised as a world-class capital, which is why is he has made so much infrastructure. The other model is of giving things for free, distributing revri… I am Punjabi, I am Sikh. Ours is a very hardworking community… The people in this area have built houses with their efforts, done business, gotten to a good position in their lives, their children will go even further ahead,” Puri said.
“The BJP is the biggest political party in the entire world and I think it’s very important that just one party should be in the municipal corporation, the legislative assembly and the Centre which can make development work reach the community,” he added.
