Fight against me, not my family: Abhishek Banerjee to PM after wife stopped at airport

By Suryagni Roy: Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Monday lashed out at the Centre after his wife Rujira Narula Banerjee and children were stopped from boarding a Dubai-bound flight at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata earlier in the day.

Reacting to the incident, Abhishek Banerjee said, “I openly say to Modi, your fight is against me politically, not against my wife, my 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. Fight me politically. If you think by doing this, I will bow my head. You are wrong.”

Targeting central probe agencies, he said, “Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksy and people like them have sucked money out of the poor and ED, CBI could not do anything, as they are only used to harass Opposition. Adani is eating away at the State Bank of India and Life Insurance Company’s money. Do you see any inquiry?”

Talking about the Bengal coal scam, he said the one who should be arrested was Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

He said, “The one who should be arrested is Amit Shah. It’s the Central Industrial Security Force who guards coal blocks. The Border Security Force guards borders. Satish Kumar, a BSF commander, was arrested by the CBI. If I say that is the tip of the iceberg and it goes down to Shah or Modi, will you speak about it?”

Rujira Narula Banerjee was stopped from boarding a Dubai-bound flight on Monday and was stopped at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in connection with the Bengal coal smuggling scam.

Rujira, who reached the Kolkata airport with her two children, was stopped by the immigration department and was denied from boarding her flight at 7 am.

She has also been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and has been called for questioning after two days.

BENGAL COAL SMUGGLING SCAM

The ED claimed that two companies, Leaps and Bound PVT LTD and Leaps and Bound Management Services LLP, are connected with Abhishek Banerjee and his family. These firms, the ED claimed, allegedly received protection funds amounting to Rs 4.37 crore from a construction company through the accused, who are being probed in the coal smuggling case.

Abhishek Banerjee’s father, Amit Banerjee, is one of the directors of Leaps and Bound Pvt Ltd. His wife Rujira Banerjee is a director of Leap and Bound Management Services Limited along with his father.

Rujira’s lawyer said that she had informed the ED, providing her travel plan details and a copy of her tickets a few days back.

“Though not required to intimate, still to express her bonafide, Rujira Banerjee, wife of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee informed ED through email of her upcoming visit to Dubia from June 5 to June 13 with her children. There was no response/communication from ED objecting to such a visit which they could not have in view of the orders of the Supreme Court,” her lawyer said.

Terming it as a gross violation of the Supreme Court’s orders, her lawyer said, “She was stopped at immigration along with her minor kids and informed that she cannot travel abroad. She was also handed over a copy of summon directing her to appear before the ED office in Kolkata on June 8. We will be moving to court as it has been a violation of SC order.”

According to sources in the ED, Rujira was stopped based on an active look-out-circular issued against her.
