Delhi L-G kicks off revamp of ‘Yamuna Vatika’, plants chinar & cherry blossom saplings

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi Monday marked World Environment Day by launching the overhaul and makeover of the 450-acre ‘Yamuna Vatika’ being undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

The project is part of the ongoing restoration scheme of the Yamuna floodplains and witnessed the plantation of 500 Chinar and 500 Cherry Blossom saplings.

Over 10 acres, the project will have a garden of seasonal flowers, walkways, jogging and cycling tracks, eco-friendly temporary structures for eateries, public utilities, events area, bio-retention zone, adventure zone and a wetland with viewing deck, the DDA said.

“Yamuna Vatika like other similar projects envisages restoration of the ecological character of the flood plains of Yamuna, while also providing respite from the dense urban character of Central and East Delhi,” the L-G said.

“Lakhs of people living in residential colonies on the Eastern Banks of the river – Daryaganj, Kashmere Gate and the Walled City – apart from commuters from North Delhi, will find an open recreational space at this project being aesthetically developed,” he also said.

The Yamuna Vatika is spread over an area of approximately 450 acres on the Western Bank of floodplains from Old Railway Bridge to ITO Barrage and, as part of the project, has for the first time witnessed efforts to introduce flora species like Chinar and Cherry Blossom in Delhi, according to the DDA.

The DDA said that Chinar and Cherry Blossom saplings had been planted over 10 acres of land after being kept under a controlled atmosphere in nurseries for a month to let them acclimatise to Delhi’s weather.

According to the DDA, the project had been hanging fire for over 7 years. Saxena said that efforts being made by the DDA in the restoration of the Yamuna floodplains will not only create environment-friendly permanent green recreational assets for the people of Delhi, but also mitigate direct pollution into the Yamuna.

To maintain the ecological character of Yamuna floodplains, the DDA said it was creating floodplain forests, terrestrial and aquatic grasslands, riverine buffer plantation along the edge of the river and eco-restoration plantation in the form of multi-grid plantation.
