Supreme Court stops demolition drive by Delhi civic body in violence-hit Jahangirpuri | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stopped an anti-encroachment drive by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in violence-hit Jahangirpuri.
The apex court has agreed to take up a plea against razing of houses of the accused.
The NDMC earlier today started the anti-encroachment drive amid heavy police deployment.

The civic body had asked for 400 personnel from Delhi Police to maintain the law & order situation during the drive in the area.

Taking a cue from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, where the administration used bulldozers to raze the properties of people accused of rioting during the Ram Navami processions, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation had decided to act against the “encroachments” in Jahangirpuri where riots broke out last Saturday during a procession commemorating Hanuman Janmotsav.
“We will follow the Supreme order and take action accordingly,” says Raja Iqbal Singh, the mayor of the NDMC, after the apex court ordered a status-quo on the demolition drive.

Dependra Pathak, special commissioner of police (law & Order), Delhi Police, on the SC orders, said, “Let the civic agency (North Delhi Municipal Corporation) take a decision. we are here to provide support & protection to the civic agency.”
Pathak took stock of the situation in the violence-hit area in the morning.
Delhi Police have so far arrested 24 and apprehended two juveniles for Saturday’s riots, among them five against whom the provisions of National Security Act have been invoked.
NSA invoked against 5 accused in Jahangirpuri
Delhi Police commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Tuesday ordered that the stringent National Security Act (NSA) be invoked against five of the accused in the Jahangirpuri communal violence case. The development comes a day after Union home minister Amit Shah asked Asthana to take strict action against the rioters and set an example in order to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The NSA has been slapped on prime accused Mohammed Ansar, Salim Chikna, Yunus Imam Sheikh, alias Sonu Chikna, Dilshad and Ahir. A proposal to this effect was submitted by the crime branch and cleared by the top cop on Tuesday. Though invocation of NSA is common for controlling law and order in other states, it’s rare in Delhi. The last time NSA was used in Delhi was around 2009-10, a senior official recalled.
