9 years of Modi: Congress asks PM Modi nine questions | India News

NEW DELHI: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing nine years in office, the Congress on Friday asked him nine questions on issues such as rising prices, unemployment and farmers’ income, and demanded an apology for the “betrayal” during his tenure.
The Opposition party also said the government should mark this day as ‘Maafi Diwas’.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had raised critical issues during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the nine questions are based on that, party general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh told a press conference at the All India Congress Committee headquarters here.
Ramesh, who was flanked by party leaders Pawan Khera and Supriya Shrinate, also released a booklet ‘Nau saal, Nau sawaal’ and said Modi had become the prime minister on this day nine years ago and therefore, the party wants to ask nine questions of him.
“We want the PM to break his silence on these nine questions,” Ramesh said.
Posing the questions to the prime minister, he asked, “Why is it that inflation and unemployment are skyrocketing in India? Why have the rich become richer and the poor poorer? Why is public property being sold to PM Modi’s friends, even as economic disparities are increasing?”
Ramesh also asked why is it that the agreements made with farmers while repealing the three “black” farm laws have not been honoured and why has the minimum support price not been legally guaranteed. Why didn’t farmers’ income double over the last nine years, he asked.
Accusing the government of indulging in corruption and cronyism, Ramesh queried why the prime minister is putting people’s hard-earned savings in LIC and SBI at risk to benefit his “friend” Adani.
“Why are you letting thieves escape? Why are you silent on rampant corruption in BJP-ruled states, and why are you letting Indians suffer,” he asked.
On the issue of national security, Ramesh said the Congress wants to ask “why is it that even after your clean chit to China in 2020, they continue to occupy Indian territory”.
He also asked why deliberately “politics of hatred” for electoral gains was being used and alleged that an atmosphere of fear in society was being fuelled.
“Why are you silent on the atrocities against women, Dalits, SC, ST, OBCs and minorities? Why are you ignoring the demand for a caste census,” Ramesh said in another poser.
He also questioned the government over democracy and federalism, alleging that it has “weakened” our Constitutional values and democratic institutions in the last nine years.
Khera alleged that the promises made by the government in the last nine years were detached from the reality.
“So when we demand answers, don’t take us 900 years back. Everyone wants to know what you did in the last nine years ….We would urge you (prime minister) to apologise during the events being held in the next five days for the betrayal of the country in the last nine years,” he said.
Ramesh asked, “Why are you practising politics of revenge against Opposition parties and leaders and why are you using blatant money power to destabilise governments elected by the people?”.
He alleged that the government had “weakened” the schemes for the welfare of the poor, needy and tribals by cutting their budgets and making restrictive rules.
“Why is it that despite the tragic deaths of over 40 lakh people due to COVID-19, the Modi government has refused to compensate their families? Why did you suddenly impose a lockdown which forced lakhs of workers to return home, and not provide any support?” Ramesh asked.

Need to take stand against BJP’s ‘corruption washing machine’: Shiv Sena (UBT)

The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of Shiv Sena on Monday said the time has come to stand up to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “corruption washing machine” to save the country and cited the letter written by Opposition leaders to Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the “authoritarian regime”.

In an editorial published in its mouthpiece Saamana, the Shiv Sena said harassing the Opposition and staying in power doesn’t augur well for democracy.

Leaders of nine opposition parties, including chief ministers Mamata Banerjee and K Chandrashekar Rao, have written to the prime minister alleging “blatant misuse” of Central agencies against members of the opposition.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray are the signatories from Maharashtra. “Now is the time to stand up to the BJP’s ‘Corruption Washing Machine’ and save the country. A letter signed by several Opposition leaders including former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thrown a light on the authoritarian regime in the country,” the Saamana said.

The “washing machine” analogy is often used by Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders to target BJP over the induction of “corrupt” leaders into that party and extending “protection” to them.

“The letter has highlighted an increase in actions against Opposition leaders since 2014 when the BJP came to power in the country. But the leaders facing charges of corruption who have joined the BJP never faced any action. Most of such cases were false,” the editorial said.

The Sena (UBT) said the country is witnessing “unprecedented chaos” under the Modi government.

“Autonomous government institutions are being privatised. This is more dangerous than Al Qaida and the Taliban. The Election Commission of India is wagging its tail before the BJP, which is why the Supreme Court has ordered the formation of a three-member committee for its future appointments,” it said.

The edit also referred to the ‘Insaaf ke sipahi’ platform floated by noted lawyer Kapil Sibal to help the people fight injustice with lawyers at the forefront. “It is not good for democracy to harass the Opposition and stay in the power,” the edit said.

The Sena (UBT) also questioned BJP’s criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his speech at Cambridge University wherein he had said Indian democracy is under attack and several politicians, including himself, are under surveillance.

“If he defamed the country, then it needs to be asked whether the claims made by Narendra Modi during his speeches during his previous foreign trips against Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and their regimes were not defaming the country?” the editorial asked.

The Sena faction alleged corruption cases against BJP leaders are being suppressed.

“It is now clear that the BJP which has amassed thousands of crores through corrupt practices has invested (the money) via (Gautam) Adani and turned them into white cash. Several PSU banks and LIC lost their investments. PM Modi talks against corruption, but it is the most corrupt regime,” the editorial said.

The Sena (UBT) also claimed the CBI and the ED are “still not seen anywhere despite Rs 8 crore cash being found at the residence of a BJP legislator in the poll-bound Karnataka. No BJP leader is ready to talk about it”.

AAP workers hold protests across states demanding Adani probe

The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday protested outside the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, demanding a probe into the allegations of fraud against the Adani group in the Hindenburg research report.

The party’s Delhi convener Gopal Rai said a joint parliamentary committee comprising members from various parties should probe the matter.

BJP is running away from the probe. There is only one leader, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is not scared of any investigation,” he said.

AAP workers protest in Chandigarh

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police on Sunday used water cannon to prevent AAP workers from moving towards the BJP office here as part of their protest against the Centre over the Adani issue.

Aam Aadmi Party workers, gathered from various parts of Punjab, wanted to “gherao” the office of the Punjab BJP in Sector 37 here to register their protest against the party-led central government.

Barricades were put up and a heavy deployment of police was made to prevent the protesters from heading towards the Punjab BJP office.

Police used a water cannon when AAP workers tried to force their way towards the BJP office, said officials.

Carrying party flags, AAP workers shouted slogans against the BJP government over the Adani issue.

AAP MLA from the Jalalabad constituency Jagdeep Kamboj slammed the BJP alleging that it has failed on all fronts.
Later, police detained several party leaders and workers.

Earlier speaking to reporters at the party office, AAP leader Harchand Singh Barsat alleged that the Adani Group’s fortunes rose under the BJP rule.

Another AAP leader, Sunny Ahluwalia, said the party will continue to raise its voice over this issue.

AAP takes out rally in Kolkata

Activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) brought out a rally in Kolkata as well demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into allegations of financial irregularities against Adani Group.

The rally, which started at Wellington Square, was scheduled to culminate at the BJP state headquarters on Muralidhar Sen Street but it ended near the Calcutta University at College Street.

The rally participants alleged that the Adani Group, whose shares are experiencing volatility in the market following the Hindenburg report, has been favoured by the Narendra Modi government in various infrastructure projects.

They said that loans were also extended to the group by PSU banks and the LIC, exposing the general public’s savings to market volatility.

“We want a thorough probe into the Adani Group’s finances and for that, a JPC must be set up,” one of the leaders participating in the rally said.

The rally dispersed after its leaders addressed the participants near the Calcutta University at College Street, about 500 metres from the BJP state headquarters, a Kolkata Police officer said.

AAP holds protests in Srinagar, Jammu

In another development, police on Sunday prevented AAP workers from staging a protest outside the BJP office in Srinagar over the Adani-Hindenburg row.

Led by AAP’s central Kashmir youth president Jibran Dar, party workers assembled in Jawahar Nagar area and raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and business tycoon Gautam Adani.

The protesters alleged that Modi was favouring Adani, but doing nothing for ordinary people.

Before they could reach the BJP office in the area, the protesters were detained by police and whisked away to the local police station.

The AAP also staged a protest outside the BJP office in Jammu over the issue and demanded a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into independent India’s “biggest scam”.

AAP workers led by senior party leaders assembled outside the BJP office in Trikuta Nagar and chanted slogans against the BJP-led government, claiming that Modi gave all resources to one person and made him the second richest person in the world.

Terming it independent India’s “biggest scam”, senior AAP leader T S Tony said, “In 2014, Adani’s assets were worth Rs 37,000 crore. They increased to Rs 59,000 crore in 2018, Rs 2.5 lakh crore in 2020 and Rs 13 lakh crore in 2022.” “We are here to bring the BJP’s direct link to this scam before the people… the exposed government is running away and not giving answers,” he said.

Tony, who is the chairman of the AAP’s minority welfare wing, also demanded a JPC probe into the alleged scam.

Opposition parties have been demanding a JPC probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the allegations against the Adani Group.

Parliamentary proceedings during the first week of the ongoing Budget Session were virtually washed out amid protests by opposition parties, including the AAP.

Telangana: K Chandrasekhar Rao has hotline with PM Narendra Modi, says Rahul Gandhi; skirts Bhagyalakshmi, Mecca Masjid | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday sharpened his attack on TRS and BJP, claiming that Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has a hotline with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and acts on his directives.
Addressing a street-corner meeting at Necklace Road after paying floral tributes at Indira Gandhi’s statue, he told crowds that Telangana government led by KCR and BJP government-led by Modi work in tandem.

“Do not be under the impression they are rivals. CM KCR has a direct line on which Modi orders the next move for KCR,” he alleged. Scotching speculation of religious stopovers during his Hyderabad walkathon, Rahul Gandhi skirted both the Bhagyalakshmi temple and the adjacent Mecca Masjid in the Charminar area.
Buttressing his claim, the Gandhi scion said TRS extended full support to almost every bill introduced by BJP in Parliament. “What’s more, TRS always raises other issues to divert attention of the House from an issue raised by Congress and other opposition parties against the BJP government,” he alleged.
Rahul Gandhi landed at the historic Charminar in the evening to unfurl the national flag at the spot, where his father, late Rajiv Gandhi unfurled the tricolour, 32 years ago marking the commencement of Sadbhavana Yatra.
Asserting that PM Modi was handing over ports, airports, roads, telecom, LIC and PSUs to his ‘rich friends’, he expressed surprise that Hyderabad airport was still not owned by rich corporates. KCR was also busy snatching lands of Dalits and tribals using the data on Dharani portal in the night and kept himself busy in minting money in irrigation projects during the day, he alleged.

Explained: Eight years of Modi Govt

The Modi Govt completes 8 years today. Since returning to power in 2019, it has checked several key boxes on its agenda. India appears to have put the worst of the pandemic behind, but multiple challenges loom at home and abroad for the remainder of the Govt’s second term.

ECONOMY: Hope and challenge

India is seen to be the world’s fastest-growing big economy in FY23, with a realistic chance of holding on to that badge for a while as a botched zero-Covid policy threatens to derail the Chinese economy. But some of the structural issues that constrained the Indian growth story before the pandemic continue to weigh heavy amid a worsening inflationary spiral and an uncertain external environment.

Over the past 24 months, India has pivoted away from its otherwise insular trade stance, with pacts signed with UAE and Australia, and negotiations initiated with EU and UK. A reboot in efforts to leverage the digital infrastructure founded on the innovative UPI platform is underway, as well as further fostering of a start-up scene that has thrown up over 100 unicorns.

The big work in progress is the Centre’s attempt at replacing 29 sets of labour laws by four broad labour codes, but implementation is behind schedule. The insolvency resolution process under IBC is seeing delays. The GST structure remains an issue; much of the buoyancy in collections is on account of compliance efforts. A manufacturing-led push relies primarily on production linked incentives, but beyond telecom hardware, the output is underwhelming. The 5G telecom push likely later this year could be key to the next wave of digitisation. Commercial mining in coal has been cleared, but output is constrained.

The absence of a data protection framework is a hurdle in leveraging the numerous digital projects underway. Private investment continues to underperform, and attempts at forced formalisation have hit MSMEs. Land and agri reforms remain pending. The consumption story, despite the post-Covid recovery, continues to totter. Cleavages in spending by the rich and poor could be worsened by prolonged high inflation. Air India and LIC have given disinvestment a boost, but the big-ticket privatisation of BPCL has fallen through.

EDUCATION: National Policy, new entrance

After a sluggish first two years in the government’s second term, much been happening on the education front in recent months.

After the announcement of the new National Education Policy in July 2020, its implementation got off to a sluggish start, mainly due to the pandemic. Now, there’s a common entrance test for admission to central universities. Students can study a four-year multidisciplinary undergraduate programme with multiple exit options, or even two degree programmes simultaneously. The UGC now permits students to pursue up to 40% of a programme online. But some announcements have been more cosmetic: for example, the midday meal scheme has been repackaged and renamed PM POSHAN without any additional allocation.

A committee has been set up for drafting the National Curriculum Framework with guidelines for changes in the school curriculum. The NCF is expected to be ready by next year. For a single regulator for higher education, a Bill to set up the Higher Education Commission of India is almost ready.

Appointment of teachers remains tardy; the National Research Foundation announced in 2019 hasn’t been set up yet; and public spending on education is nowhere near the 6% of GDP promised in 2014 and has in fact been decreasing. Apart from IIMs, none of the other centrally-run institutions have been granted total autonomy; and not even 20 of the 50 Institutions of Eminence promised by the BJP have been set up.

SOCIAL SECTOR: Rise of the Labharthi

Leveraging the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) platform to expand coverage of the flagship PM-Kisan scheme from 1 crore beneficiaries in February 2019 to over 10 crore in January 2022, new initiatives like PM-GKAY to provide free foodgrain to nearly 80 crore people, and retreating with a bloody nose from the battle to reform the agriculture sector — these have been the social sector headlines of Modi 2.0 so far.

10 instalments of PM-Kisan have been released so far — Rs 1.80 lakh crore has been transferred directly into farmers’ accounts. The 11th installment is due for release on May 31. PM-Ujjwala beneficiaries have gone from 8 crore in September 2019 to 9 crore in April 2022. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, launched in response to the pandemic in February 2020 to provide 5 kg free foodgrains to 81.35 crore people every month, has been extended till September 2022. The Centre has also been able to roll out the One Nation, One Ration Card (ONORC) project to enable NFSA beneficiaries to avail of their entitlement anywhere in India.

The flagship Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in the government’s second term, aims to provide tap water connections to all rural households by 2024. The Jal Shakti Ministry said on Saturday that 50% rural households had already been covered. If implemented fully and successfully, Jal Jeevan will be a scheme of gamechanging impact.

The withdrawal, in November 2021, and eventual repeal by Parliament of the three farm laws announced in June 2020 are both a setback and an unfinished agenda point for the government. Experts have argued that reform is critical to the advancement of Indian agriculture.

DIPLOMACY & STRATEGY: Tightrope and partnerships

New Delhi’s diplomatic outreach succeeded in blunting international criticism of the constitutional changes in Jammu and Kashmir early on, and significant strategic achievements have followed. But the neighbourhood remains in turmoil, and China presents a huge challenge.

With an experienced diplomat at the helm, Modi 2.0 began by explaining to the world its decision to abrogate Art 370 that revoked the special status for Jammu and Kashmir. The transition from the Trump administration to the one led by President Joe Biden was smooth, and the strengthening of the Quad was a significant achievement. The framing of an Indo-Pacific strategy by European partners including France, Germany, UK, and EU is a positive for India’s interests, as China is seen as a violator of the global rules-based order. India’s Covid diplomacy largely worked, albeit with some challenges of supply.

The amendment to the citizenship law set the cat among the pigeons, and New Delhi had to reach out to Dhaka to assuage concerns. The strategic establishment has been occupied with diplomacy with Beijing, as the two-year border stand-off poses the most serious threat of recent times. The war in Ukraine has made it difficult for New Delhi to continue deep engagement with defence partner Russia. The balancing act has been successful so far, but remains a delicate work in progress, as do engagements with China and the neighbourhood.

Taliban-ruled Afghanistan presents a huge strategic challenge. New governments are in power in Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and the latter two nations are in economic and political crises. New Delhi has to navigate its ties with its neighbours and help maintain a peaceful and stable South Asia. Its leadership in the subcontinent will be tested in the near future.

POLITICS: BJP growing, concerns remain

In its second term, the BJP has made strides towards achieving its ideological agenda and consolidated its position as the major pole of national politics. But it remains challenged by regional parties, a struggling economy, and a communally charged atmosphere.

In the last years, the BJP has made itself and its ideology the major pole of Indian politics. With the key missions in its ideological agenda – the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya and abrogation of Article 370 — already achieved, the ban on triple talaq is being seen as progress halfway towards a Uniform Civil Code. The party is slowly and cautiously embarking on a new mission on Kashi and Mathura temples, but it is a legislative agenda.

Although the BJP has become a dominant political force at the national level, regional parties still call the shots in a number of southern and eastern states. The party is working on a blueprint to alter the “political and ideological character” of these states.

There has been very little progress in restoring the electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir, and the reopening of the Kashi and Mathura disputes has put paid to hopes of impending closure in these cases following the resolution of the Ram Janmabhoomi matter in favour of the Hindu side. The ‘bulldozer politics’ in several states has enhanced insecurities among the minorities and opened the government up to allegations of partisan behaviour. Satisfactorily addressing all of these dissonances remains a task before the government and party in line with the Prime Minister’s promise of “sabka vishwas”. Unemployment too remains a concern.

HEALTH: Vaccines for all, but work to do

Most of government’s time and resources in the last two years have been consumed in responding to the pandemic, which has in turn exposed India’s fragile healthcare infrastructure.

Just before the pandemic, the government had unveiled its plan to create an elaborate network of health and wellness centres (HWCs) for delivery of primary healthcare. About 1.5 lakh HWCs are proposed to be set up. An initiative to provide a unique health ID to every citizen and create a registry of healthcare professionals and health facilities has also been launched. In providing Covid-19 vaccines to everyone, India has done better than most other countries.

Most of the health initiatives, including the creation of HWCs and digital mission are works in progress. So are programmes like the Jan Arogya Yojana for insurance to the poor. Barely 5% of India’s population has health insurance right now, which makes the Jan Arogya Yojana a very important initiative.

The government still has a long way to go in providing universal and affordable access to healthcare facilities. The partnership of state governments is vital. Upgrading of infrastructure, reforms in medical education, expansion of nursing and para-medical education, and regulation of costs of healthcare are some of the big projects the government has to attend to.

SECURITY & DEFENCE: LWE in decline, reforms pending

On the security front, the performance of the government has been a mixed bag in the last eight years..

According to Ministry of Home Affairs, Left Wing Extremism-related violence has declined by 77% between 2009 and 2021, and resultant deaths by 85% between 2010 and 2021. The geographical influence of Maoists has been reduced to just 41 districts from 96 in 2010. Gains have also been made in the Northeast

The creation of the post of the Chief of Defence Staff was a key reform, but work appears to have stalled. After CDS General Bipin Rawat was killed in a helicopter crash in December, the position is still vacant. Also, theaterisation in the armed forces isn’t working at the desired pace.

Terror emanating from Pakistan remains a cause for concern. Despite the government’s claims of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir following abrogation of its special status on August 5, 2019, a rise in civilian killings has posed questions. Also, as many as 25 modules of Khalistan militancy were identified and neutralised by security forces in 2021, compared to 15 in 2020 and just seven in 2019.

Boost for small investors: PM Modi unveils scheme on government bonds | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underlined the need for ease of investment, trust in the system and convenience for the common man along with financial inclusion and ease of access as he unveiled a scheme that allows retail investors to buy government bonds from a dedicated RBI platform.
PM Modi, who also launched an integrated ombudsman scheme, underlined the need for a strong banking system, while listing out several initiatives by the government and Reserve Bank of India, including a clean-up of the books of banks.
“With the RBI Retail Direct Scheme, small investors now have a medium through which they can safely invest in government securities. The Integrated Ombudsman Scheme has led to the ‘One Nation, One Ombudsman’ system taking shape in the country,” he said, adding that the investment will also help the government undertake development work.
The PM complimented RBI and the finance ministry for steps taken and said reforms initiated in recent years have resulted in greater inclusion. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said a coordinated effort by the finance ministry and RBI has led to a recovery post Covid-19.
She said the Retail Direct Scheme will facilitate retail participation, deepen the bond market and allow for a fair market determined rates for all the across the yield curve.
“The retail participation has been hesitant all these years, because of the cost involved and because of the traditional intermediary system which has prevailed. Now this will probably bring in a direct cost free, convenience driven, and also build confidence in the retail participation in the government securities,” she said.
Modi said that financial services – from banking to pension and insurance — used to be like an exclusive club in India till six-seven years ago, but are now accessible to common citizens, poor families, farmers, small traders-businessmen, women, Dalits, deprived and backward.
“Those who had the responsibility of taking these facilities to the poor never paid any attention to it. Rather, various excuses were made for not changing. It was said that there is no bank branch, no staff, no internet, no awareness, no idea what the arguments were,” he said while criticising the earlier government.
Soon after taking charge, the Modi government had launched the Jan Dhan scheme which was followed by group health and life insurance schemes. Besides, he said, last mile financial inclusion was possible due to digital empowerment. While pointing to the spread of UPI, the PM said digital transactions have shot up 19 times in seven years. “Today, 24 hours, seven days and 12 months, our banking system is operational in the country. We have seen its benefits during Covid times.”
He called upon policymakers to strengthen trust and confidence of investors in the financial market. “We have to keep the needs of the citizens of the country at the centre and keep on strengthening the trust of the investors. I am confident that RBI will continue to strengthen India’s new identity as a sensitive and investor-friendly destination,” the PM said.
