7th UN Global Road Safety Week held in Kolkata

The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Tuesday organised the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week at Newtown in Kolkata to raise awareness about road safety and promote sustainable transportation alternatives. Students, local residents and road safety experts participated in the event.

The included Techno India director and CEO Sujoy Biswas; Manas Ranjan Sahoo, zonal head (east), corporate communication, LIC; Sudipta Mukherjee, member of ICC OHS Committee and Safe India president Dilip Panda.

Sudipta Mukherjee said, “I believe that the development of a nation is tied to the progress of its infrastructure, and a crucial aspect of that is the road network. We sometimes tend to overlook the importance of road safety which can lead to a rise in accidents and jeopardise not only our lives but also the well-being of others.”

Sujoy Biswas said, “Through technological advancements, we have the potential to transform transportation. There are five steps in improving road safety — using public transport that promotes equity and health of people, safety at the core of mobility, designing roads keeping those at the highest risk in mind, safe walking and cycling to contribute to people’s health; and affordable, accessible and sustainable public transport.”

Dilip Panda said, “Road safety requires a collective effort from all stakeholders. By integrating sustainable transportation options like cycling lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, we can create cities that are safer, healthier, and more environmentally friendly.”
