Couple kills ex-employer over unpaid dues, gets into accident while fleeing

Enraged over not being paid her pending salary, a woman and her husband allegedly stabbed her former employer to death and fled — only to meet with an accident 15 minutes later and land up in hospital.

The incident took place in Northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh Saturday night. Police said the accused allegedly attacked the victim’s husband as well. The crime was witnessed by the couple’s 15-year-old daughter who hid in the kitchen and called police.

The deceased has been identified as Sonia Jain (45), who worked with the LIC, said police. Her husband, Praveen Jain, runs a catering business. Their daughter, Sonam, is a Class X student.

Police said the accused, Shweta, used to work as a caretaker at the victim’s home and quit in February. “Shweta had multiple fights with the couple over money; she alleged they refused to pay her. She got angry and told her husband,” a senior police officer said.

She and her husband Akash went to meet the couple to receive her pending salary Saturday. Sonia and Shweta, along with their husbands, sat to discuss the issue before they got into a heated argument. Police said Sonam was sent to make tea.

“She couldn’t find the tea powder and called her father. They suddenly heard a scream and found Akash allegedly stabbing Sonia. Praveen rushed to save his wife, but the accused couple overpowered and stabbed him multiple times,” added the officer.

Police sources said the accused were also discussing “to do something” to Sonam, but they couldn’t find her and decided to flee.

Sonia and her husband were rushed to BJRM hospital by neighbours, where she was declared dead on arrival by doctors. Praveen was shifted to Lok Nayak; police said he is critical.

Meanwhile, the accused got into an accident while fleeing on their bike, hardly 3 km from the Jains’ home.

Police said they were looking for the accused but couldn’t find them at their home. Officers then mapped CCTVs around the area and traced the bike’s movement till Jahangirpuri. Several bus drivers, auto and e-rickshaw drivers were questioned along with locals.

DCP (Northwest) Jitendra Meena said, “We were then told that a couple met with an accident late Saturday night. Onlookers said they seemed to be in a hurry and crashed near a divider. They were taken to a nearby hospital. They were traced to the hospital on Sunday; we have arrested them.”

Police have booked the accused for murder. During questioning, it was found that they were upset over the salary settlement. “Shweta was hired last year to take care of Sonia, who had some health issues, and do household chores. The family was shifting to a new house in North Delhi and had removed Shweta from the job,” said police.
