Sachdeva takes over Delhi BJP: ‘Priority to remove Kejriwal’

After being asked to step in as the party’s working president following its defeat in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls last year, Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva was formally handed over the reins of the party’s state unit Thursday.

Party sources said its senior leadership had increasingly become convinced that Sachdeva, who saw it through consecutive episodic battles on the floor of the MCD House over the last three months, had performed “really well” at leading the charge against an increasingly embattled AAP both strategically and on the street.

“I am grateful to the national leadership for giving me this opportunity. My first and only priority is to ensure that a (Delhi) Chief Minister who, by invoking slogans demanding the removal of PM Narendra Modi…, is uprooted from his post for the benefit of the country,” Sachdeva told The Indian Express.

“All of us BJP workers will work with single-minded determination to push the AAP off the political horizon of Delhi first in the 2024 and then the 2025 elections,” he added.

Sachdeva, whom an insider described as ‘a soft spoken pratham varsh shikshit swayamsevak’, an individual who has ‘passed basic training by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’, enjoys strong support among the Punjabi and trader communities in the capital and was among four state unit presidents appointed by the BJP after being vetted by national president J P Nadda on Thursday morning.

“It was only a matter of time. Sachdeva is an able organiser and has shaped the party’s current campaign against the AAP strategically as well as organisationally on the ground by leading each protest or demonstration against the AAP,” a party leader said.

A former journalist with over half a decade of professional experience in the field, Sachdeva (55) was born to parents from Muzafarpur and Peshawar, now in Pakistan, and spent his formative years in north Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, where his family set up a printing press.

Currently a resident of East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, Sachdeva is credited with having ensured that a “significant chunk” of the vote share came the BJP’s way in East Delhi in the MCD elections.

Active in politics since 1989, Sachdeva has held several roles ranging from the party’s general secretary to vice president, a post he was appointed to in 2020; he is currently at the helm of the BJP’s strategy of cornering the AAP over 10 specific corruption allegations, and gradually upping the ante against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, personally, in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
