Yamuna level crosses danger mark again, Delhi govt issues alert

[ad_1]

The water level in the Yamuna crossed the ‘danger’ mark once again on Friday, reaching a level of 205.34 m at the Old Railway Bridge in Delhi. This has prompted instructions from the Delhi government to ensure the safety of residents of low-lying areas — many of whom had just returned home.

Meanwhile, rainfall is predicted in the capital over the coming week.

Recorded slightly above the danger mark of 205.33 m at 6 pm, the Central Water Commission (CWC) forecast indicated it was likely to rise further to around 205.45 m by 11 pm.

A senior official of the CWC said that it was, however, likely to stabilise thereafter. “There is a slight increase. While it is likely to rise a little more by midnight, a further increase is not expected after that,” the official said.

The official attributed the rise in levels to both rainfall that may have occurred upstream, as well water from the floodplains returning to the river.

After having remained above the danger mark for a little more than a week, the water level had fallen below the danger mark on Tuesday but rose past the ‘danger’ level again on Wednesday, before falling below this mark once more on Thursday morning.

Some parts of the floodplains in Delhi remain inundated, with the water not having receded entirely yet after levels in the river rose last week, following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Yamuna.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Himachal Pradesh between 8.30 am on Thursday and 8.30 am on Friday, along with thunderstorms in parts of Northwest India on Friday, including areas in Haryana, Chandigarh, Western Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A single weather observatory in Delhi, the one in North Delhi’s Mungeshpur, recorded 21.5 mm of rainfall on Friday. Light rainfall is expected over the weekend, going by the IMD forecast.

The forecast also indicates that light to moderate rainfall is likely on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The rainfall activity over northwest India is likely to increase around July 25 with the western end of the monsoon trough shifting northwards, according to the IMD.

Other parts of northwest India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, North Haryana and Chandigarh could see rainfall on Friday as well. Rainfall is also expected to continue over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh till July 25.

Delhi L-G kicks off revamp of ‘Yamuna Vatika’, plants chinar & cherry blossom saplings

[ad_1]

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi Monday marked World Environment Day by launching the overhaul and makeover of the 450-acre ‘Yamuna Vatika’ being undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

The project is part of the ongoing restoration scheme of the Yamuna floodplains and witnessed the plantation of 500 Chinar and 500 Cherry Blossom saplings.

Over 10 acres, the project will have a garden of seasonal flowers, walkways, jogging and cycling tracks, eco-friendly temporary structures for eateries, public utilities, events area, bio-retention zone, adventure zone and a wetland with viewing deck, the DDA said.

“Yamuna Vatika like other similar projects envisages restoration of the ecological character of the flood plains of Yamuna, while also providing respite from the dense urban character of Central and East Delhi,” the L-G said.

“Lakhs of people living in residential colonies on the Eastern Banks of the river – Daryaganj, Kashmere Gate and the Walled City – apart from commuters from North Delhi, will find an open recreational space at this project being aesthetically developed,” he also said.

The Yamuna Vatika is spread over an area of approximately 450 acres on the Western Bank of floodplains from Old Railway Bridge to ITO Barrage and, as part of the project, has for the first time witnessed efforts to introduce flora species like Chinar and Cherry Blossom in Delhi, according to the DDA.

The DDA said that Chinar and Cherry Blossom saplings had been planted over 10 acres of land after being kept under a controlled atmosphere in nurseries for a month to let them acclimatise to Delhi’s weather.

According to the DDA, the project had been hanging fire for over 7 years. Saxena said that efforts being made by the DDA in the restoration of the Yamuna floodplains will not only create environment-friendly permanent green recreational assets for the people of Delhi, but also mitigate direct pollution into the Yamuna.

To maintain the ecological character of Yamuna floodplains, the DDA said it was creating floodplain forests, terrestrial and aquatic grasslands, riverine buffer plantation along the edge of the river and eco-restoration plantation in the form of multi-grid plantation.

Delhi BJP leader Vijay Goel accused of assaulting woman during discussion on stray dogs, says ‘not the case at all’

[ad_1]

After a video of former BJP MP Vijay Goel seemingly trying to snatch the mobile phone of a person recording a video of their interaction over the issue of stray dogs emerged, he has been accused of assaulting the woman.

In a video of his interaction at a park in North Delhi’s Model Town on Sunday, Goel can be seen sitting across from a group of people who are speaking to him about his views on feeding stray dogs. As soon as he notices the interaction is being filmed, he gets up from his chair and lunges towards the woman making the video, asking her why she was recording him.

Goel, however, vehemently denied the allegations of assault and said that the video had been presented in a way to make him look like the aggressor.

Goel told The Indian Express, “There are three to four young people who come to meetings and try to disturb them. They are not even from the areas where the meeting is being held. What business do they have being there? In the meeting at Model Town, they came, they sat, and started asking questions. We did not stop them. In fact, I was very respectful”.

“When we were sitting and having some refreshments, they started to record the conversation, which I objected to. In the video posted by them, it seems like I am either snatching the phone or slapping the person holding the camera. That is not the case at all. I only asked them to stop recording and got up from my seat. If I had tried to assault someone, wouldn’t they have complained to the police?” he asked.

Goel also said his agenda for the meetings is the need for sterilising dogs, starting adoption centres, and raising issues about the availability of anti-rabies vaccines in hospitals.

In a complaint filed by eight people at the Model Town Police Station, it has been alleged Goel, during the meeting, asked people to stop feeding strays and to take them to their homes if they wanted to feed them. The complaint demanded that an FIR be registered against Goel and said his statements are against the Supreme Court order which allows people to feed dogs in residential areas.

Delhi Police officers said they haven’t received a complaint from the woman or anyone about the alleged assault. “From the video, it’s not clear whether he scolded her or assaulted her…” said an officer.

Goel has held several meetings to discuss dog bites and the number of strays on the streets. In one of his events at Constitution Club earlier this month, two women had come to blows and had to be separated by the police. Animal rights activists have accused Goel of fuelling a hateful agenda against strays.

One of the complainants told The Indian Express that Goel got aggressive during the interaction and tried to snatch the phone from a woman who was recording a video.

“Everyone was making videos at the event. Goel got aggressive and attempted to snatch the phone from a lady sitting beside me. He never asked us to stop filming and was well aware that everyone at the event was making videos,” said Malika Kaur, one among the eight complainants.

Accused in 2018 Australia beach murder arrested from Delhi

[ad_1]

The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested a 38-year-old Indian nurse who allegedly killed an Australian woman in Queensland in 2018. The police said the accused, Rajwinder Singh, fled to India days after killing Toyah Cordingley, 24.

According to reports, Cordingley was walking alone with her dog at a beach when Singh allegedly attacked her. While Singh later fled from the country leaving his wife and three children behind, the Queensland Police started a manhunt to nab him. On November 4 this year, the Australian High Commission announced a 1 million dollar reward for information on the suspect. Sources said this is the highest reward offered in a murder case. The Australian authorities had also approached Interpol and other agencies.

A Delhi Police spokesperson said, “Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Singh. The CBI and Interpol were involved. They got a non-bailable warrant issued against Singh under the Extradition Act on November 21.” The police said they had inputs from the CBI and other agencies and a search operation was conducted.

The Queensland Police had offered 1 million dollars for any information on him.

“On Friday, around 6 am, based on the inputs shared by the CBI, Interpol and Australian counterparts, an intelligence-based operation led to the accused. He was apprehended from GT Karnal Road in North Delhi. He is being produced before the concerned court as per law for further proceedings,” said the spokesperson.

Singh is said to be extradited in connection with the case. He hails from Buttar Kalan in Moga and moved to Australia over two decades ago.

“He was not in touch with his wife or kids. His father and other relatives also live in Australia. He left the country soon after the murder. He was staying in North Delhi and had changed his looks to evade arrest. He is being questioned and produced before the court,” said a source associated with the developments.

Confirming the arrest, Queensland Police tweeted: “We can confirm a man has been arrested in India today following a significant investigation into the tragic death of Toyah Cordingley in Far North Queensland in 2018…”
