Water Supply In Parts Of Delhi To Remain Affected Tomorrow

Delhi Jal Board said water supply will remain affected till the situation improves (File)

New Delhi:

Water supply will remain affected in many parts of Delhi on Sunday due to Haryana releasing less water in the Yamuna and two canals, the Delhi Jal Board said on Saturday.

The water level in the Wazirabad pond stood at 667.3 feet as against the normal of 674.5 feet.

Also, less water is being received from Haryana through the Carrier Lined Canal (CLC) and the Delhi Sub Branch (DSB), the utility said.

Operations at the Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla WTPs have been hit. Water supply will remain affected till the situation improves, it said.

Water will be available at low pressure in northeast Delhi, west Delhi, north Delhi, central Delhi, south Delhi, including Delhi Cantonment, and New Delhi Municipal Council areas, the DJB added.

The utility had last week written a letter to the Haryana Irrigation Department, the fifth time this summer season, asking it to release water from the Somb river, a tributary of the Yamuna.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also requested Haryana to release additional water in the Yamuna on humanitarian grounds.

Delhi requires around 1,200 MGD (million gallons per day) of water, while the DJB supplies around 950 MGD.

Haryana supplies a total of 610 million gallons of water a day to Delhi through two canals — CLC (368 MGD) and DSB (177) — and the Yamuna (65 MGD).

CLC and the DSB are supplied water from Hathni Kund via Munak canal and Bhakra Beas Management Board.

Besides, Delhi receives 253 MGD from Uttar Pradesh through the Upper Ganga Canal, and 90 MGD is drawn from ranney wells and tube wells installed across the city.

Water supply to be hit again in parts of Delhi

[ad_1]

Water supply in Delhi is set to take a further hit with production being affected at the water treatment plants (WTPs) at Haiderpur and Bawana.

The Delhi Jal Board said in a note issued on Saturday: “Due to depletion of pond level at Wazirabad, and maximum possible diversion from CLC (Carrier Lined Channel) towards Wazirabad, and flow fluctuation in DSB (Delhi Sub-Branch) & CLC, also excessive floating materials in CLC/DSB at intake Haiderpur, the clear water production has been affected from water treatment plants at Haiderpur phase-I, phase-II, and Bawana.” The CLC and DSB bring water from Haryana to Delhi. The WTP at Haiderpur produces 200 MGD (million gallons per day), while Bawana produces 20 MGD.

The areas where supply is likely to be affected till the situation improves are North Delhi, Northwest Delhi, West Delhi, and parts of South Delhi. The fall in the water level at the Wazirabad pond had already impacted production at the 90 MGD WTP at Chandrawal and the 120 MGD WTP at Wazirabad. The level at the Wazirabad pond on Saturday was 668.3 ft, the lowest so far this season, against the required level of 674.5 ft, according to the DJB. On May 17, when the Yamuna was running dry, and the water level at the Wazirabad pond was 669 ft, the DJB had written to the Haryana Irrigation Department requesting an additional 150 cusecs of water to be released into the river. This was the fourth time, since April 30, that the DJB had written to officials in Haryana requesting additional water. The letter stated that water production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal had fallen by 55 MGD. “Delhi is not getting flow from river Yamuna, resulting in a shortage of about 120 cusecs…,” the letter said. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said on May 17, “The Delhi government is lying on the matter of water. Delhi is being given its share of 1050 cusecs.”

On May 12, the Haryana Irrigation Department had responded to the DJB’s request for additional water, stating that Haryana is supplying Delhi’s full share of water, and that the “shortage of water at Wazirabad, if any, is solely due to internal mismanagement of water by DJB and Haryana has no role in it.”

Delhi Water Supply Situation Worsens As Yamuna River “Almost Dry “

Delhi Water Supply Situation Worsens As Yamuna River 'Almost Dry '

Delhi requires around 1,200 MGD of water, while the DJB supplies around 950 MGD.

New Delhi:

The water supply situation in the national capital has deteriorated further as the Wazirabad pond level has now dropped to 668.3 feet, the lowest this year, against the normal of 674.5 feet, officials said on Saturday.

“Since the Yamuna river is almost dry, we are diverting water from the Carrier Lined Canal (CLC) and the Delhi Sub Branch (DSB) towards Wazirabad. As a result, the water production at Haiderpur Phase I and Phase II and Bawana water treatment plants have been hit,” an official said.

Water in north Delhi, northwest Delhi, west Delhi and parts of south Delhi will be available at low pressure till the situation improves, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said in a statement.

Haryana supplies a total of 610 million gallons of water a day to Delhi through two canals — CLC (368 MGD) and DSB (177) — and the Yamuna (65 MGD).

The CLC and the DSB are supplied water from the Hathni Kund via Munak canal and the Bhakra Beas Management Board. Besides, Delhi receives 253 MGD from Uttar Pradesh through the Upper Ganga Canal, and 90 MGD is drawn from ranney wells and tube wells installed across the city.

Water supply from Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla WTPs, which lift raw water from the Wazirabad pond, has reduced by up to 30 per cent.

The Chandrawal, Wazirabad and the Okhla WTPs have a capacity of 90 MGD, 135 MGD and 20 MGD, respectively.

The plants supply drinking water to northeast Delhi, west Delhi, north Delhi, central Delhi, south Delhi, including Delhi Cantonment, and New Delhi Municipal Council areas.

Delhi requires around 1,200 MGD of water, while the DJB supplies around 950 MGD.

The water supply has been further reduced by around 65 MGD due to the depleted water level in the Wazirabad pond.

The DJB had on Tuesday written another letter to the Haryana Irrigation Department, asking it to urgently release 150 cusecs of additional water in the “almost dry” Yamuna.

This was the fourth time in less than three weeks that the utility has written to the Haryana Irrigation Department.

On Friday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had asked the Delhi government not to indulge in “petty politics” over the water sharing issue, saying if it wants more water, it should ask Punjab to release his state’s “legitimate share”.
