Karnataka: Karnataka CM announces Rs 4 lakh life & accident cover for gig workers | India News

[ad_1]

BENGALURU: Presenting his 14th budget overall and first for the current Congress dispensation, Karnataka CM and finance minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced insurance cover of Rs 4 lakh for gig workers, perhaps a first for any state. Presenting the proposal, Siddaramaiah particularly named delivery workers in e-commerce companies.
“In order to provide social security to the gig workers in the unorganised sector, ie, employed as full-time or part-time delivery personnel in e-commerce companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon etc, insurance facility of total Rs 4 lakh will be provided…” Siddaramaiah said. This includes life insurance of Rs 2 lakh and accident cover of Rs 2 lakh.

The premium will be borne by the government. In the run-up to assembly elections in May, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had interacted with gig workers in Bengaluru, listening to their demands and grievances. The Karnataka-based United Food Delivery Partners’ Union appreciated the move but said they need to be recognised as formal employees and not gig workers.

“The expectations of the Union have not been fulfilled in this budget. We welcome the move to extend insurance coverage to our peers and colleagues but the gig worker has still not received the recognition of being a worker in letter and spirit,” said Vinay Sarathi, president of the union.

The union said its workers are in the field for long hours and toil like everyone else, but are deprived of even the most basic facilities, such as sanitation, drinking water, resting places and so on.

“The government must enact a law to immediately put an end to the gross exploitation and injustice prevalent in the gig economy,” the union said.

BJP: Central PSU job numbers virtually at same levels since 2013 | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: BJP on Monday lashed out at Rahul Gandhi for his “devious agenda” on public sector jobs.
It argued that the overall manpower in central PSUs had remained virtually unchanged since 2013, despite the privatisation of Air India and staff rationalisation at companies such as BSNL and MTNL, with the latest numbers expected to show an addition to the workforce due to the special recruitment drive launched by the Modi government.
“In 2013, the total number employed with PSEs stood at 20.3 lakh. The same number as in 2022 was 19.8 lakh, despite rationalisation in BSNL/MTNL and Air India’s disinvestment. Additionally, as part of Mission Recruitment, CPSEs have added over 20,000 new jobs since June last year, which will reflect in this year’s tally,” BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said in a series of tweets, while accusing the Congress of mutilating data.
He said the Congress party should “stop shedding crocodile tears” over the state of PSUs as several companies had seen an increase in manpower between 2013 and 2022.

“Like Indian Oil Corporation (increase of 79,828), Mahanadi Coalfields (36,418 additions), Nuclear Power Corporation (22,235 new employees), Northern Coalfields (incremental 17,674 jobs) and HPCL Rajasthan Refinery has added 16,422 new head count, among others,” he said.
Gandhi had tweeted that the jobs in PSUs had reduced from 16.9 lakh in 2014 to 14.6 lakh in 2022. He mentioned the reduced number of employment in BSNL, SAIL, MTNL, SECL, FCI and ONGC. He also said the number of contractual employees had doubled, raising questions on whether the rise in contractual employees is a medium to “snatch” the constitutional rights of reservation.
Malviya tweeted, “Poorly conceived policies of Congress have brought down countless PSUs and sunk taxpayer’s money, which could have been used for health and education. Due to massive corruption and foolish policies, Air India and BSNL were decimated under the UPA govt. While PSUs have been given far greater freedom under the Modi government.”
He said that the profit of CPSEs had soared 93% from around Rs 1.3 lakh crore in 2013-14 to around Rs 2.5 lakh crore in 2021-22.
Malviya also said that Gandhi should stick to doing “choreographed interviews, which can be edited later, to remove bloopers and make you look reasonable”. He said, “You ran a vicious campaign against HAL, SBI, and LIC too, eventually to look stupid, when each of these PSUs posted super profits.”
He said contribution of all CPSEs to central exchequer by way of excise duty, custom duty, GST, corporate tax, interest on central government loans, dividend, and other duties and taxes stood around Rs 5.1 lakh crore in FY 2021-22 as against Rs 2.2 lakh crore in FY 2013-14, a jump of 130%. Malviya also said how the net worth of all CPSEs has increased from Rs 9.5 lakh crore as in 2014 to Rs 15.6 lakh crore as in March 2022, registering a growth of 65%.
“Truth is that Modi Govt has reformed PSUs and they are doing much better than they ever did under the Congress,” Malviya tweeted.

‘Stick to doing choreographed interviews’: Amit Malviya lashes out at Rahul Gandhi over PSUs jobs ‘eliminated’ remark

[ad_1]

You should stick to doing choreographed interviews, which can be edited later, to remove bloopers and make you look ‘reasonable’.

You ran a vicious campaign against HAL, SBI and LIC too, eventually to look stupid, when each of these PSUs posted super profits. You are once again… https://t.co/lrjSVjAnFi pic.twitter.com/XPMGSbYkAQ

— Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) June 18, 2023

Attacking the government, Gandhi on Sunday said that PSUs used to be the pride of India and the dream of every youth for employment but today, they are “not the priority of the government”.

Reacting to this, Malviya tweeted: “You should stick to doing choreographed interviews, which can be edited later, to remove bloopers and make you look ‘reasonable’… You ran a vicious campaign against HAL, SBI, and LIC too, eventually to look stupid, when each of these PSUs posted super profits.”

“You, Rahul Gandhi, should focus on doing Mickey Mouse kind of interviews with your Papa’s colleagues, who are still indebted to the Gandhi family, for the largesses received… You should not try to look intelligent by talking about jobs etc because you understand nothing about these things,” he said.

Malviya also presented a set of statistics to challenge Gandhi’s claims. “In 2013, the total number employed with PSEs stood at 20.3 lakh. The same number as in 2022 was 19.8 lakh, despite rationalisation in BSNL/MTNL and Air India’s disinvestment,” he wrote.

The BJP leader claimed that Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) have added over 20,000 new jobs since June last year as part of Mission recruitment. “Several PSUs have in fact reported an increase in employee strength in 2022 over 2013 when UPA was in power,” he said, listing Indian Oil Corporation, Mahanadi Coalfields, Nuclear Power Corporation, Northern Coalfields, and HPCL Rajasthan Refinery among the PSUs that have registered increased headcounts.

“Congress should stop shedding ‘crocodile tears’ over the state of affairs of PSUs. Poorly-conceived policies of Congress have brought down countless PSUs and sunk taxpayers money, which could have been used for health and education. Due to massive corruption and foolish policies, Air India and BSNL were decimated under the UPA Govt. While PSUs have been given far greater freedom under the Modi Govt,” he further said.

Along with this, Malviya also claimed that the contribution of all CPSEs to Central Exchequer through various duties and taxed has increased, along with their net worth.

9 years of Modi: Congress asks PM Modi nine questions | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing nine years in office, the Congress on Friday asked him nine questions on issues such as rising prices, unemployment and farmers’ income, and demanded an apology for the “betrayal” during his tenure.
The Opposition party also said the government should mark this day as ‘Maafi Diwas’.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had raised critical issues during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the nine questions are based on that, party general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh told a press conference at the All India Congress Committee headquarters here.
Ramesh, who was flanked by party leaders Pawan Khera and Supriya Shrinate, also released a booklet ‘Nau saal, Nau sawaal’ and said Modi had become the prime minister on this day nine years ago and therefore, the party wants to ask nine questions of him.
“We want the PM to break his silence on these nine questions,” Ramesh said.
Posing the questions to the prime minister, he asked, “Why is it that inflation and unemployment are skyrocketing in India? Why have the rich become richer and the poor poorer? Why is public property being sold to PM Modi’s friends, even as economic disparities are increasing?”
Ramesh also asked why is it that the agreements made with farmers while repealing the three “black” farm laws have not been honoured and why has the minimum support price not been legally guaranteed. Why didn’t farmers’ income double over the last nine years, he asked.
Accusing the government of indulging in corruption and cronyism, Ramesh queried why the prime minister is putting people’s hard-earned savings in LIC and SBI at risk to benefit his “friend” Adani.
“Why are you letting thieves escape? Why are you silent on rampant corruption in BJP-ruled states, and why are you letting Indians suffer,” he asked.
On the issue of national security, Ramesh said the Congress wants to ask “why is it that even after your clean chit to China in 2020, they continue to occupy Indian territory”.
He also asked why deliberately “politics of hatred” for electoral gains was being used and alleged that an atmosphere of fear in society was being fuelled.
“Why are you silent on the atrocities against women, Dalits, SC, ST, OBCs and minorities? Why are you ignoring the demand for a caste census,” Ramesh said in another poser.
He also questioned the government over democracy and federalism, alleging that it has “weakened” our Constitutional values and democratic institutions in the last nine years.
Khera alleged that the promises made by the government in the last nine years were detached from the reality.
“So when we demand answers, don’t take us 900 years back. Everyone wants to know what you did in the last nine years ….We would urge you (prime minister) to apologise during the events being held in the next five days for the betrayal of the country in the last nine years,” he said.
Ramesh asked, “Why are you practising politics of revenge against Opposition parties and leaders and why are you using blatant money power to destabilise governments elected by the people?”.
He alleged that the government had “weakened” the schemes for the welfare of the poor, needy and tribals by cutting their budgets and making restrictive rules.
“Why is it that despite the tragic deaths of over 40 lakh people due to COVID-19, the Modi government has refused to compensate their families? Why did you suddenly impose a lockdown which forced lakhs of workers to return home, and not provide any support?” Ramesh asked.

Is Rahul Gandhi Victim Of Congress Conspiracy, Asks Anurag Thakur

[ad_1]

Is Rahul Gandhi Victim Of Congress Conspiracy, Asks Minister Anurag Thakur

Anurag Thakur slammed the Congress party and claimed that it was obsessed with Gandhi family.

New Delhi:

Why no eminent lawyer of the Congress came to the aid of Rahul Gandhi when he was convicted in a defamation case leading to his disqualification from Parliament, Union Minister Anurag Thakur asked on Tuesday and wondered if it was deliberate and part of a conspiracy within the party.

Mr Thakur, addressing the ‘Times Network India Digital Fest’, also described Gandhi as a “loose cannon” and a “serial offender” who has seven cases of defamation in various courts even after being cautioned by the apex court.

The Information and Broadcasting Minister made it clear that neither the government nor the Lok Sabha secretariat had any role to play in the former Congress president’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

Mr Thakur said that according to the Representation of the People Act, Rahul Gandhi stood disqualified the moment he was sentenced to a two-year jail term in a criminal defamation case.

The senior BJP leader wondered why none of the eminent lawyers sent by the Congress to the Rajya Sabha could be of any help in the defamation case against Mr Gandhi.

“Was it deliberate? Is there a conspiracy within the Congress? It is surprising that an entire battery of lawyers came to the rescue of Pawan Khera within an hour. Why did the Congress leader not move court in support of Rahul Gandhi? This is a big question,” Mr Thakur said.

“Who are these persons who hatched the conspiracy against Rahul Gandhi,” the Union minister asked.

Anurag Thakur said that even after issuing a written apology to the Supreme Court, Mr Gandhi continued to make defamatory remarks against communities, people and organisations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He also slammed Gandhi for speaking harshly to a journalist during a press conference on Saturday.

“Some people do not know that the person who was spoken harshly to had covered the Congress party for 15 years. He lashed out at the journalist and still he talks of freedom of the press,” the Union minister said.

Mr Thakur dismissed suggestions that the BJP was over-obsessed with Gandhi and said it was the Congress that has been unable to come out of the influence of the Gandhi family.

He also accused the Congress of derailing the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament after it realised that the BJP would insist on an apology from Gandhi for his remarks “maligning India” on foreign soil.

The minister also rejected the opposition charge that the BJP government was on the defensive on the Adani issue and said that SBI, LIC, RBI, SEBI had come out with statements on the matter.

He said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman too had made a statement on the issue and an investigation by a Supreme Court-appointed committee was underway.

“There is nothing to hide. Our institutions are strong. We have to trust them. Had this not been the case, everything would be haywire,” he said.

Mr Thakur slammed the Congress party and claimed that it was obsessed with Gandhi family and prioritised them over the nation.

“Since 2013, 12 lawmakers have lost their Parliament membership due to their involvement in a criminal offence. But, Congress prioritises only a family over the country’s judiciary and people and Parliament proceedings,” the senior BJP leader said.

Parliament LIVE updates: Cong calls MPs meet to discuss House strategy; protests over RaGa’s disqualification, Adani to continue

[ad_1]

Congress MP and member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, Manish Tewari, writes to BJP MP Jayant Sinha, Chairperson of the Committee, to suggest that the “Committee should forthwith examine allegations against Adani Group made by Hindenburg Research”.

The letter suggests that the Committee summon SEBI & RBI, officials from LIC, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs & other regulatory bodies “to ascertain whether there were any failures on their part on the Adani issue.”

The letter has also been signed by Congress MPs and members Gaurav Gogoi & Pramod Tiwari.

“We find it surprising that this Committee is prepared to have a hearing on the recent SVB bank-run. The said bank is based in California and has little to no effect on the regulatory mechanisms of our country. Yet the Committee is unwilling to have a discussion on the Adani affair which struck a blow to investor confidence in our own capital market,” reads the letter.

Na Jaanch, Na Jawab: Rahul Gandhi accuses PM Modi of investing public money in Adani companies

[ad_1]

Days after being disqualified as the Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of investing public money in Adani companies.

Rahul Gandhi hits out at PM Modi

By India Today News Desk: Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Adani issue, alleging undue favours are being given to him.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader said the public’s retirement money is being invested in Adani’s companies.

Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark.

A day later, he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case.

CONGRESS PROTESTS AGAINST GOVT

On Monday, several opposition MPs, wearing black clothes, took out a march from parliament to Vijay Chowk to protest against the government over the Adani issue and Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

The protesters, including Congress MP Sonia Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, gathered near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament complex and raised slogans against the government.

Holding a huge “Satyamev Jayate” banner and placards with “save democracy” written on them, the MPs proceeded towards Vijay Chowk where they staged a sit-in.

“How has Adani’s wealth multiplied so much in the last few years. When you are going to foreign countries how many times have you taken the industrialist with you. The PM has not been able to give answers to questions raised against Adani,” Kharge told reporters at Vijay Chowk.

“We want a JPC on the Adani issue. Why is the government not agreeing to this? Why are you scared of a JPC probe… it means ‘dal mein kuchh kala hai’ (something is wrong),” he said.

The opposition has been seeking a joint parliamentary committee probe into the allegations of corporate fraud and stock price manipulations against the Adani Group.

Kharge also raised the issue of Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as MP after a Surat court convicted and sentenced him in a 2019 criminal defamation case.

“You want to defame Rahul Gandhi. That is why you transferred the case to Gujarat even as the comments were made in Kolar in Karnataka. Today is a black day for democracy,” Kharge said.

Kharge said opposition MPs were dressed in black as the prime minister is “finishing” democracy.

Trinamool Congress, which has so far stayed away from opposition protests, joined the sit-in on Monday.

Earlier, MPs of various opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, BRS, and SP, met at the Parliament complex to discuss a strategy to take forward the Adani issue as well as Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification matter in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification shows BJP’s dictatorial mindset: Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel | India News

[ad_1]

PM Narendra Modi can’t escape questions about Adani, and BJP’s resort to legal cover to disqualify Rahul from LS is a stark manifestation of its dictatorial attitude, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel tells TOI’s Subodh Ghildiyal. Excerpts from the interview:
How do you see the whole drama about Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification?
This is dictatorial mindset of BJP. They are orchestrating an elaborate theatre to evade answering just one specific question — where did Rs 20,000 crore in Adani’s shell companies come from? Dictators around the world resort to such tactics — scare the opposition, put leaders in jail and disqualify them from Parliament. Rahul says “daromat” and they are out to scare him. The truth is that the dictator is worried as to what will happen if people stop being scared of him? The truth is the government was worried how long could they shut the Parliament just to stop Rahul from speaking.
BJP is alleging that Rahul insulted OBCs? Are Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi OBCs?
They are upper class. Modi surname is written by many, like Piloo Modi was a Parsi. My surname Baghel is used by tribals, Rajputs, even SCs in Chhattisgarh. I am an OBC. Yo u can project Congress in whatever light y ou want, but answer the question: who put Rs 20,000 crore in Adani’s companies.
Polls are due in Chhattisgarh this year and the state will be a focus area of BJP’s campaign that Rahul’s remark on Modi surname is anti-OBCs, like the PM’s appeal to Sahu community in 2019. How would you deal with it?
“Kaath ki handi ek bar chadti hai”. What has the PM done for Sahus or Telis or OBCs? They will not vote every time. If you are such a benefactor of OBCs, then why don’t you order “caste census”? Chhattisgarh’s bill increasing reservation for backwards and tribals is p ending with the governor for four months. If you are so sympathetic to OBCs, then get our bill approved. BJP’s national vicepresident Thakur Raman Singh called me a “Chhota aadmi”, and I am a CM and anOBC. In Bhanupratappur bypolls, Raman Singh called me “a rat, a dog, a cat” in public. This is the mindset of BJP’s Thakur Raman Singh about OBCs. The Modi government is targeting OBC leaders — Teja shwi Yadav, M Stalin, Akhilesh Yadav. In Chhattisgarh, the ED has made a permanent station. Are you doing anything good for OBCs, by action or attitude?
Congress made Rafale an issue but it did not fly with people? Will your focus on Adani have popular resonance?
This is a big issue. After Hindenburg report, Adani has fallen from second richest man to nobody knows which rank. The funds of LIC and SBI has been inv ested in Adani firms. The share value has fallen. The ED and I-T haven’t gone to Adani, while the opposition-governed states are raided daily. People will understand the truth. When water is released from dam, it takes time to reach the tail end.
How big a setback is Rahul’s disqualification for the party?
This is not a setback for Congress. It has proved how scared the Modi government is of Congress and Rahul.

BJP Playing Caste Politics, Defending Nirav, Lalit Modi: Congress Slams JP Nadda

[ad_1]

Playing Caste Politics, Defending Nirav, Lalit Modi: Congress Slams BJP

Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court. (file)

New Delhi:

The Congress on Friday refuted BJP chief JP Nadda’s allegation that Rahul Gandhi compared OBC communities to thieves, and accused the ruling party of defending the likes of fugitives Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, and indulging in “caste politics”.

Amid a political fight between the BJP and Congress following Mr Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case over the “Modi surname” remarks, Mr Nadda alleged that “lies, personal slander and negative politics are integral” to his politics.

“By comparing OBC communities to thieves, Rahul Gandhi has shown a pathetic and casteist mindset. However, his latest tirade is not surprising. For the last many years, he has always reduced levels of political discourse,” Mr Nadda said.

Hitting back, Mallikarjun Kharge, in a tweet in Hindi, said, “Modi government cannot escape from JPC! Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Mehul Choksi fled with the money of PNB and the public. OBCs did not do so, then how were they insulted?” “SBI/LIC suffered losses due to your ‘best friend’!” he said, slamming the government.

“‘Ek toh chori mein sahyog phir jatigat rajneeti ka prayog‘ (First providing help in stealing then applying caste politics),” Mr Kharge said, and termed it “shameful”.

Later, interacting with reporters, the Congress president said his party is seeking answers as to who ran away with people’s money, while the BJP is trying to distract from the main issue.

“They are talking of insult to backward classes. The Congress has always stood with and fought for the backward classes, scheduled castes and minorities. These people, who believe in Manu, talk of backward classes,” Mr Kharge said.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also lashed out at Mr Nadda, saying he was distorting facts and indulging in “politics of defamation”.

“By doing this, he is defending Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi. This truth had to come out, and now it has come out. Thank you, Nadda ji, for your honesty. Now please show some honesty on Adani too,” Mr Ramesh said in a tweet in Hindi.

He also hit out at Union Minister Bhupender Yadav who attacked the Congress for raising questions on the Gujarat court convicting Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case.

“Bhupendra Yadav should spend more time implementing environment and forest laws without fear or favour. Instead, he is busy defending Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi. These two have stolen thousands of crores of public money and are fugitives running from justice in India,” Mr Ramesh said.

Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remarks.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma, which held 52-year-old Mr Gandhi guilty under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 and 500, also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

Mr Gandhi can escape immediate disqualification as a member of parliament if the appellate court suspends the conviction as well as the two-year jail term.

Parliament: Adani and UK remarks issues stall Parliament yet again; war of words between BJP, Congress gets ugly: Top developments | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: Several opposition party leaders on Tuesday held a protest in the corridors of Parliament and raised slogans demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue, even as the BJP accused the opposition MPs of repeatedly insulting Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar and stalling the parliamentary process.
Both houses of Parliament adjourned early amid uproar over the Adani issue and demand by ruling party members that Rahul Gandhi apologise for his ‘democracy in danger’ remarks.

The opposition leaders also hung a banner that read “We want JPC” from the first floor of the Parliament building.
The House will meet again on March 23.
TMC MPs held a separate protest in the Parliament complex and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi break his silence on the Adani issue.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have failed to transact any significant business so far due to the impasse during the second part of the Budget session of Parliament that started on March 13.
Here are the top developments:
Irresponsible Opposition wilfully stalling Parliament: Piyush Goyal
Union minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday accused the Opposition of willfully stalling Parliament with its “irresponsible” comments and “unfounded” allegations to mislead the country amid global recognition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Goyal, joined by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, accused the Opposition of repeatedly insulting Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar by refusing to even meet him.
Even on Tuesday, some parties including the Congress did not attend the meeting called by him. Though they were present in the meeting called by Speaker Om Birla, he alleged.
Kharge stopped from speaking: Congress
The Congress hit back at Goyal and said that the Leader of the House got “his MPs to prevent the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge from speaking twice after the Chairman had permitted him”.

“Piyush Goyal is accusing Oppn of boycotting meeting called by Chairman RS. This is from the Leader of the House who got his MPs to prevent LoP Kharge ji from speaking twice after Chairman had permitted him. Silencing of LoP is also an issue quite apart from the JPC on Adani,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter.
In another tweet, Ramesh said, “How can the Oppn demand for a JPC into the PM-linked Adani scam be linked to the BJP’s demand for an apology from Rahul Gandhi on totally baseless accusations. The JPC is on a real, documented scam. The apology demand is a hoax being raised to divert attention from the Adani scam.”
Ramesh said this morning Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Kharge was given permission by the Chairman to speak and got up to do so but was not allowed by sloganeering BJP MPs. “Chairman then adjourned RS. How can the logjam be broken if Modi Government behaves like this,” he said.
Rahul present-day Mir Jafar: BJP
BJP leader Sambit Patra hit out at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and said that he is the “present-day Mir Jafar” of Indian Polity and said that he has to apologise for his remarks in the UK.
Mir Jafar was a military general who betrayed Siraj ud-Daulah and helped the East India Company in the battle of Plassey in June 1757. Siraj was captured soon thereafter and later executed.
“He always defames the nation. He is the present-day Mir Jafar of Indian Polity,” Patra said, adding: “He insulted the country and ask the foreign power to intervene in the country. This is a consistent ‘conspiracy’ of Congress and Rahul Gandhi. His participation is least in Parliament and he says that no one allows him to speak.”
Patra further said: “Mir Zafar did the same thing, he gave 24 Parganas to get help from East India Company and now Rahul is doing the same kind of politics.”
“He is asking for help from foreign countries to become ‘Sahzada’ in India, Patra added.
Further, attacking Gandhi on his remarks of saying ‘unfortunately I’m an MP,’ Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi doesn’t know what to say. He speaks only with the help of Jairam Ramesh. He himself said that ‘unfortunately I am an MP”.
Criticising government is not criticising the nation: Congress
Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday slammed BJP leader Sambit Patra after the latter compared Rahul Gandhi with Mir Jafar and said that he would soon get a “strong answer”.

While talking to the mediapersons, Khera said, “Criticizing government is not criticizing the nation. Government should understand this. The debate does not make democracy weaken instead it strengthens it. The government is doing this drama because they are trying to escape the opposition’s questions.”
“They are worried that Rahul Gandhi might again ask the PM about his relations with Adani. There is no JPC probe yet, this is the reason they are creating so much drama,” he added.
He added, “He will get a strong answer soon. We are also learning from them (BJP) how to give answers. Soon action will be done on his statement.”
Taking a barb at the BJP, he said the party will be seen as “Jai Chands” in history and claimed its ideological forefathers were known apologisers of the British.
A fictional account of King Jayachandra (aka Jaichand) occurs in a legendary text

Prithviraj Raso

.
The epic poem was likely written centuries after his death. According to this account, he was a rival of King Prithviraj Chauhan.
His daughter Samyukta eloped with Prithviraj against his wishes, and he allied with the foreign non-Hindu Ghurids to ensure Prithviraj’s downfall.
The name “Jaichand” became synonymous with the word “traitor” in folklore of northern India because of this legend.
Rahul writes to Lok Sabha Speaker
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has asserted that he has the right to respond in Parliament to the “totally baseless” and “unfair charges” hurled at him by senior ministers in the Lok Sabha over his democracy remarks.
In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Gandhi invoked Rule 357 which allows for “personal explanations” and also cited the example of BJP MP and then minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who invoked the Rule to give an explanation regarding comments made by Jyotiraditya Scindia in relation to him in Parliament

“I am making such a request again. I am seeking this permission under the conventions of Parliamentary practice, the constitutionally embedded rules of natural justice and Rule 357 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha,” he said in his letter to the Speaker.
The Congress leader said members of the ruling regime have made “scurrilous and defamatory claims against me” both within and outside Parliament.
“As a result of these allegations, and the rules invoked by these individuals, it is only appropriate that you kindly allow me a right to reply as contained in Rule 357 which allows for ‘personal explanations’,” he said.

Gandhi’s democracy remarks have triggered a massive political row, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions and the Congress hitting back, citing instances of PM Modi raising internal politics abroad.
During his interactions in the United Kingdom recently, Gandhi had alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions.
TMC holds separate protest
TMC MPs held a separate protest in the Parliament complex and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi break his silence on the Adani issue.
Accusing the government of helping businessman Gautam Adani by not ordering a probe into allegations of fraud levelled against his group, the party demanded that Adani be arrested.
“Adani should be arrested. Modi is trying to protect Adani in the Rs 1 lakh crore scam. This is also the reason why they are not allowing any discussion in Parliament. The TMC leadership has already demanded that the 10 non-BJP states should begin their own probe into this and ensure that public money is not misused,” said TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.
TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay demanded an explanation from the prime minister on how public money was used by Adani. “PM Modi should explain this in the House. How LIC-SBI money ended up with Adani,” he said.
Next sitting on March 23
Lok Sabha Chair Rajendra Agarwal wished MPs for various festivals, including Chaitra Sukhladi, Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Navre and Sajibu Cheiraoba.
He also said on the request of several members to enable them to participate in the festivities, the House will not have a sitting on Wednesday and instead it would meet on March 23.
