Once a hub for licenced arms, gun houses in Kashmere Gate now a mere shadow

gun houses in Kashmere Gate, licenced arms, arm factory, amateur shooting, arms licences, Garg Armory, indian express, indian express news RK Gupta, general manager at Garg Armoury, a gun house set up in 1949, told The Indian Express: “In the 90s, gun houses, with an elaborate clientele and dozens of employees, used to line Church Road… but now all we do is stare at the weapons, something that once used to be a prized possession.”

From rifles to pistols either for hunting, amateur shooting or solely for personal protection, gun houses in North Delhi’s Kashmere Gate — the capital’s hub — had it all. Business, however, has taken a hit recently. The reason: A reduction in issuance of arms licences, as well an increase in rejection of such applications, by the Delhi Police. As per police data, the number of licences issued in 2022 and 2021 was much lower than that in previous years. Out of the 1,390 applications received in 2022, almost 43 per cent or 602 were rejected and only 77 were approved. The rest are pending. In 2021, there were 476 rejections and 97 approvals out of 2,007 applications. In contrast, in 2019, 815 were approved and there were 736 rejections out of 1,754 applications. The previous year 2018 saw 577 applications being approved and 389 rejected out of 2,648 applications received. Senior officers had said the low number of new licences and high rejections can be attributed to the stringent criminal verification system to ascertain an applicant’s profile and necessity to be allowed access to a weapon.

Delhi News Live Updates: Manish Sisodia withdraws interim bail plea pending before Delhi HC in liquor policy case

[ad_1]

These lines from renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Subh-e-Azadi (The Dawn of Freedom) exemplify the mood of the newly-opened Partition Museum at the Dara Shikoh Library in Delhi. Inaugurated by Delhi Education Minister Atishi within the Ambedkar University campus in Kashmere Gate on May 19 this year, the museum, according to Kishwar Desai, the chairperson of The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust, is being referred to as the “people’s museum”.

It took more than a dozen blood droplets splattered on the road for nearly 100 metres to trace a grievously injured 25-year-old man, accused of breaking into an Uber driver’s car and stealing his mobile at knife point along with his co-accused, hiding inside a park.

Officers said that the incident took place Monday around 4:20 AM, when Uber driver Santosh, 35, a resident of Madanpur Khadar, was inside his car in North Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla when two persons arrived on a scooty and broke the side-window glass of the vehicle by hurling a stone at it. They pointed a sharp-edged weapon at the driver and robbed him of his mobile.

BJP’s formula to eliminate opponents, says AAP on Kejriwal’s CBI summons

[ad_1]

By Pankaj Jain: This is the BJP’s formula to eliminate its opponents, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reacted as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in the liquor policy case on April 16.

AAP leader Atishi said, “The central government agency sent a notice to CM Kejriwal. This is the BJP’s formula to eliminate its opponents. Whoever raises a voice against them will be eliminated. Thousands of crores were invested in PM Narendra Modi and his friend’s company. LIC’s Rs 50,000 crore was drowned. All these were not investigated. But CM Kejriwal exposed it.”

“I want to tell the PM that none of the leaders of our party are going to be afraid of your threats. We were born to fight corruption. You may hang us, but we are not afraid of you,” she added.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “PM Modi has invested lakhs of crores of black money in his friend Adani’s company. In the Legislative Assembly of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal exposed the truth about Modi’s corruption. The CBI notice is his punishment. The campaign against your scam will continue.”

While addressing a press conference, Sanjay Singh said that a conspiracy is being hatched to arrest Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

After the video of a young schoolgirl from Jammu went viral, who requested PM Modi to build a nice school for them, AAP reacted, “PM Modi, with a fake degree, is very busy with fake cases against opposition parties and looting the country along with his dear friend. PM Modi only knows how to build a BJP headquarters worth hundreds of crores by looting the country. Only Arvind Kejriwal will build your school.”

BJP’S SCATHING ATTACK ON KEJRIWAL

“He (Arvind Kejriwal) should stop giving himself a certificate of being staunch honest. If the CBI has summoned you, then you will have to answer them,” said BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana on CBI summons to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

CONGRESS DEMANDS KEJRIWAL’S RESIGNATION

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Anil Chaudhary, took to Twitter and wrote, “Kejriwal is the mastermind responsible for making Delhi the “Capital of Scams”. If you want to save the dignity of the post of CM, then “by resigning” come to the CBI doorstep!”

In February, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Delhi Deputy CM and AAP leader Manish Sisodia. He was arrested after being questioned for over eight hours in the Delhi excise policy case.

Sisodia was arrested under sections 120 b (criminal conspiracy), 477 A (intent to defraud) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In July last year, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended a CBI probe into the allegations that the new excise policy gave “undue benefits” to private liquor vendors. Later in August, the CBI raided over 20 locations in Delhi-NCR and Punjab. Manish Sisodia’s house was among the locations that were raided.

AAP workers hold protests across states demanding Adani probe

[ad_1]

The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday protested outside the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, demanding a probe into the allegations of fraud against the Adani group in the Hindenburg research report.

The party’s Delhi convener Gopal Rai said a joint parliamentary committee comprising members from various parties should probe the matter.

BJP is running away from the probe. There is only one leader, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is not scared of any investigation,” he said.

AAP workers protest in Chandigarh

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police on Sunday used water cannon to prevent AAP workers from moving towards the BJP office here as part of their protest against the Centre over the Adani issue.

Aam Aadmi Party workers, gathered from various parts of Punjab, wanted to “gherao” the office of the Punjab BJP in Sector 37 here to register their protest against the party-led central government.

Barricades were put up and a heavy deployment of police was made to prevent the protesters from heading towards the Punjab BJP office.

Police used a water cannon when AAP workers tried to force their way towards the BJP office, said officials.

Carrying party flags, AAP workers shouted slogans against the BJP government over the Adani issue.

AAP MLA from the Jalalabad constituency Jagdeep Kamboj slammed the BJP alleging that it has failed on all fronts.
Later, police detained several party leaders and workers.

Earlier speaking to reporters at the party office, AAP leader Harchand Singh Barsat alleged that the Adani Group’s fortunes rose under the BJP rule.

Another AAP leader, Sunny Ahluwalia, said the party will continue to raise its voice over this issue.

AAP takes out rally in Kolkata

Activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) brought out a rally in Kolkata as well demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into allegations of financial irregularities against Adani Group.

The rally, which started at Wellington Square, was scheduled to culminate at the BJP state headquarters on Muralidhar Sen Street but it ended near the Calcutta University at College Street.

The rally participants alleged that the Adani Group, whose shares are experiencing volatility in the market following the Hindenburg report, has been favoured by the Narendra Modi government in various infrastructure projects.

They said that loans were also extended to the group by PSU banks and the LIC, exposing the general public’s savings to market volatility.

“We want a thorough probe into the Adani Group’s finances and for that, a JPC must be set up,” one of the leaders participating in the rally said.

The rally dispersed after its leaders addressed the participants near the Calcutta University at College Street, about 500 metres from the BJP state headquarters, a Kolkata Police officer said.

AAP holds protests in Srinagar, Jammu

In another development, police on Sunday prevented AAP workers from staging a protest outside the BJP office in Srinagar over the Adani-Hindenburg row.

Led by AAP’s central Kashmir youth president Jibran Dar, party workers assembled in Jawahar Nagar area and raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and business tycoon Gautam Adani.

The protesters alleged that Modi was favouring Adani, but doing nothing for ordinary people.

Before they could reach the BJP office in the area, the protesters were detained by police and whisked away to the local police station.

The AAP also staged a protest outside the BJP office in Jammu over the issue and demanded a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into independent India’s “biggest scam”.

AAP workers led by senior party leaders assembled outside the BJP office in Trikuta Nagar and chanted slogans against the BJP-led government, claiming that Modi gave all resources to one person and made him the second richest person in the world.

Terming it independent India’s “biggest scam”, senior AAP leader T S Tony said, “In 2014, Adani’s assets were worth Rs 37,000 crore. They increased to Rs 59,000 crore in 2018, Rs 2.5 lakh crore in 2020 and Rs 13 lakh crore in 2022.” “We are here to bring the BJP’s direct link to this scam before the people… the exposed government is running away and not giving answers,” he said.

Tony, who is the chairman of the AAP’s minority welfare wing, also demanded a JPC probe into the alleged scam.

Opposition parties have been demanding a JPC probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the allegations against the Adani Group.

Parliamentary proceedings during the first week of the ongoing Budget Session were virtually washed out amid protests by opposition parties, including the AAP.

BJP govt trying to destroy federal structure: Opposition leaders at KCR rally

[ad_1]

COMING TOGETHER at a mega rally organised by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) — its first since turning national after its earlier identity as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) — Opposition parties on Wednesday accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of trying to destroy the country’s federal structure.

Besides Telangana Chief Minister and BRS leader K Chandrashekar Rao, Chief Ministers Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala), Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi), Bhagwant Mann (Punjab), Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and CPI leader D Raja were among those present.

“Ideas such as secularism, democracy, federal structure, social justice and equality… were included in India’s Constitution so as to uphold the values championed by our freedom struggle… Since those in power now were not part of our collective (freedom) struggle then, they do not know the values on which India has been built as a sovereign, democratic republic. So they seek to alter the basic structures on which our modern nation has been built, even as they call for celebrations such as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav… Amidst the glam and glitter of these celebrations, they seek to undo the very foundations of our country, our democracy and our Constitution,” said Vijayan, accusing the BJP-led government at the Centre of trying to destroy the country’s federal structure.

Saying that a people’s movement had started in Khammam, the Opposition leaders called for the ouster of the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Akhilesh also raised the issue of federalism in his speech. “Modi is using Governors to confront elected CMs of states. The BJP does not believe in federal system of governance. The BJP and RSS don’t believe in diversity,” he said. “A message from Khammam should go out, that the republic is under threat, and it should be saved by defeating the BJP,” he said.

He said Modi had said on Tuesday that 400 days remained for the government at the Centre. “When a government starts to count its days, understand that it is not going to return. Now only 399 days remain,” he said.

“Governors are being used by Modi to create trouble for CMs. How will a country progress if the country’s PM spends all day on how to trouble which CM, which state to send CBI and ED to. He only thinks which government to topple. Today, the country is demanding change. The BJP has ruined the country. It is time to change the government,” said AAP leader and Delhi CM Kejriwal.

His party colleague, Mann, spoke on similar lines, accusing the BJP of seeking to topple “every non-BJP government”. Both Kejriwal and Mann said they would implement some of the BRS government’s schemes in their states too.

Raja praised the KCR government’s welfare measures like Dalit Bandhu and Rythu Bandhu. “Republic Day will be observed but the democracy and unity of the country are under threat. They are trying to change the Constitution. Our Constitution says the Indian state should be a federal state. The BJP and RSS want to impose medieval rule,” he said.

In his speech, KCR announced a number of sops for the district. “The US and China have less agricultural land than India… We have hard-working people, the best food chain in the world. Yet, we have to import dal and palm oil. We have so much water, but still large areas don’t receive drinking or irrigation water. States are fighting over sharing river water. The Congress and BJP are the reason for the sad state of affairs in this country. If the BRS government comes to power at the Centre, all farmers will receive free power and financial support. LIC will be bought back if Modi sells it,” he said.

By India Today Web Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Shelly Oberoi for the post of Delhi’s Mayor. The AAP won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls early this month, ending the BJP’s 15-year rule.

The mayoral elections are scheduled for January 6 but Shelly Oberoi is likely to win the post because the BJP has announced it will not participate in the polls.

As per provisions, the MCD has to elect five mayors in five years, starting with a woman. In the third year, an elected councillor from the Scheduled Caste will get the post.

Delhi had one mayor for the whole of the city till 2012 when the MCD was trifurcated into the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. The unification happened early this year. So, Delhi will have one mayor for the whole of the city after a decade.

BJP would have won East had Centre not reunified the 3 corporations | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: The merger of the three erstwhile corporations into a single entity may have cost BJP a victory in one. Had they continued as distinct entities, the saffron party would have comfortably won the east corporation while AAP would have won the other two with ease, an analysis of the results shows.
Of the 250 newly created wards, 61 encompass the territory covered by the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation. Of these 61 wards, BJP won 35, AAP 20, Congress five and independent one, which gives BJP a clear majority in this part.

East

Of the 95 wards that cover what was earlier the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, AAP won 58, BJP 33, Congress three and independent one ward, a decisive verdict for AAP. Similarly, of the 94 wards that are spread across the area that constituted the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, AAP won 56, BJP 36, Congress one and an independent one. Like in the south, this would have given AAP a dominant position in the north corporation.
While delimitation has redefined ward boundaries and reduced their number from 272 to 250, making ward-specific comparisons impossible, the three parts remain comparable as whole entities.

Delhi municipal election results, counting, timings: All you need to know | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: Results for the Delhi municipal elections are set to be announced on Wednesday even as exit polls showed that the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will sweep the 250-ward corporation that has been under BJP rule for around 15 years.
Surveys have predicted that the BJP is likely to trail AAP while Congress’s tally is likely to remain in the single digits.
Security arrangement and timing
Officials said 42 centres have been set up across the city for the counting exercise, which will begin at 8am amid tight security. The centres are located in areas such as Shastri Park, Yamuna Vihar, Mayur Vihar, Nand Nagari, Dwarka, Okhla, Mangolpuri, Pitampura, Alipur and Model Town.

Twenty companies of paramilitary personnel and over 10,000 officers of Delhi Police have been deployed at the 42 centres.
Besides the counting centres, heavy police presence will also be ensured outside the offices of political parties. Adequate security personnel will also be deployed to prevent clashes between activists of different parties.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Public Relations) Suman Nalwa said adequate security arrangements had been made for the day of counting. “We are fully prepared for the counting day and keeping a strict vigil on the strongrooms,” Nalwa said.
Since the number of voters in each ward is not very high, officials said the results on most seats are likely to be announced by the afternoon.
Three-way contest
Delhi recorded a low voter turnout of 50.48% in the keenly-watched polls held on December 4, results of which may have ramifications beyond the national capital.

The election was largely touted as a three-way contest among a spirited AAP, a confident BJP and a hopeful Congress.
There are 250 wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and 1,349 candidates are in the fray in this election.

There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations (North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation) from 2012-2022, before being reunified into the single MCD that formally come into existence on May 22 this year.
The erstwhile MCD, established in 1958, was trifurcated in 2012 during Sheila Dikshit’s tenure as the chief minister.
First civic poll after riots
In the 2017 civic election, the BJP had won 181 of the 270 wards. Polling could not be held on two seats due to the death of candidates. The AAP had won 48 wards and the Congress 27. The voting percentage that year was around 53%.

This was the first civic election after the February 2020 riots and the fresh delimitation exercise. The election was held days after the first phase of the Gujarat assembly elections, and a day ahead of its second phase.
Counting of votes for Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat will take place on December 8.
