BJP’s formula to eliminate opponents, says AAP on Kejriwal’s CBI summons

By Pankaj Jain: This is the BJP’s formula to eliminate its opponents, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reacted as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in the liquor policy case on April 16.

AAP leader Atishi said, “The central government agency sent a notice to CM Kejriwal. This is the BJP’s formula to eliminate its opponents. Whoever raises a voice against them will be eliminated. Thousands of crores were invested in PM Narendra Modi and his friend’s company. LIC’s Rs 50,000 crore was drowned. All these were not investigated. But CM Kejriwal exposed it.”

“I want to tell the PM that none of the leaders of our party are going to be afraid of your threats. We were born to fight corruption. You may hang us, but we are not afraid of you,” she added.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “PM Modi has invested lakhs of crores of black money in his friend Adani’s company. In the Legislative Assembly of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal exposed the truth about Modi’s corruption. The CBI notice is his punishment. The campaign against your scam will continue.”

While addressing a press conference, Sanjay Singh said that a conspiracy is being hatched to arrest Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

After the video of a young schoolgirl from Jammu went viral, who requested PM Modi to build a nice school for them, AAP reacted, “PM Modi, with a fake degree, is very busy with fake cases against opposition parties and looting the country along with his dear friend. PM Modi only knows how to build a BJP headquarters worth hundreds of crores by looting the country. Only Arvind Kejriwal will build your school.”

BJP’S SCATHING ATTACK ON KEJRIWAL

“He (Arvind Kejriwal) should stop giving himself a certificate of being staunch honest. If the CBI has summoned you, then you will have to answer them,” said BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana on CBI summons to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

CONGRESS DEMANDS KEJRIWAL’S RESIGNATION

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Anil Chaudhary, took to Twitter and wrote, “Kejriwal is the mastermind responsible for making Delhi the “Capital of Scams”. If you want to save the dignity of the post of CM, then “by resigning” come to the CBI doorstep!”

In February, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Delhi Deputy CM and AAP leader Manish Sisodia. He was arrested after being questioned for over eight hours in the Delhi excise policy case.

Sisodia was arrested under sections 120 b (criminal conspiracy), 477 A (intent to defraud) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In July last year, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena recommended a CBI probe into the allegations that the new excise policy gave “undue benefits” to private liquor vendors. Later in August, the CBI raided over 20 locations in Delhi-NCR and Punjab. Manish Sisodia’s house was among the locations that were raided.

Daily Briefing: One year of Russia-Ukraine war; Congress’ plenary session; and more

The Big Story: Today marks one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. The war has claimed thousands of lives on both sides and reshaped the world as we know it. And worryingly, there appears to be no end in sight.

Express View: As the battle zones of Ukraine gear up for significant military escalation on the first anniversary of the Russian aggression, the challenge for New Delhi is to take a fresh and hard look at its assumptions about the war.

India’s changing stance: Delhi has evolved its position as the facts of the conflict became clearer and the world felt the impact of the war. From its statements to its actions, Shubhajit Roy explains how its approach shifted.

Where things stand: Ukraine managed to push back the invading army from Kyiv. It also reversed some other territorial losses, including at Kherson in November, the only regional capital Russia had seized. For India, the Ukraine war has been an opportunity to practice strategic autonomy, Nirupama Subramanian writes.

In today’s episode of the 3 Things podcast, we take stock of what has happened in the last one year of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Congress’ three-day national conclave is set to begin in Raipur today. This meeting is important as it is expected to set the tone of the party for its upcoming electoral battles, including 2024. But the Congress finds itself facing twin challenges: First, the detention of its media department head Pawar Khera, and second, the exit of CR Kesavan, the great-grandson of late Congress stalwart C Rajagopalchari. We break down what the Congress is up against.

Since the 2020 T20 World Cup final at the MCG, India has played Australia 11 times, winning one and losing nine whereas one was washed out. The head-to-head stats might suggest that Australia have had the wood over India but most of the matches have been closely contested. Just like Thursday’s T20 World Cup semifinal, those matches have been missed opportunities for India.

The Punjab government Thursday gave in to an “ultimatum” issued by radical leader Amritpal Singh, after hundreds of his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar and clashed with the police. Singh had demanded that his associate Lovepreet Singh Tufan, arrested on charges that included kidnapping, be released on Friday. Many of his supporters were carrying weapons and guns.

Thursday seemed like a hectic day for the Congress, which saw itself facing a crisis of sorts after its senior leader Pawan Khera was deplaned in Delhi and arrested on charges of using “objectionable words” against PM Narendra Modi. The party’s quick thinking to approach the Supreme Court provided relief, and Khera was granted interim relief. The party hopes the issue will subside, and not overshadow the Raipur session which begins today.

Mr A has topi pehnau-ed India: Mahua Moitra on Adani row

TMC leader Mahua Moitra said a famous person whose name starts with “A” and stinks of crony capitalism has duped the country.

New Delhi,UPDATED: Feb 7, 2023 23:44 IST

Mahua Moitra demanded that an inquiry be ordered against the activities of the Adani Group (Photo: PTI)

By India Today Web Desk: Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, in a stinging attack on the government over the Adani row, said “A, the billionaire businessman,” has ‘topi pehnau-ed’ or duped the country.

Participating in the debate on the ‘Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address’ in Lok Sabha, Mahua Moitra said a famous person whose name starts with ‘A’ and ends with ‘I’, who stinks of crony capitalism, has duped everyone.

Her remark led to an angry exchange between Trinamool and BJP MPs as she used an offensive word once her speech concluded.

The fiery speech was aided by props as Moitra brought two birthday caps into the House to press her argument that the businessman being most talked about had “topi pehnau-ed” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

She demanded that an inquiry be ordered into the activities of the Adani Group and the allegations raised by Hindenburg Research.

“Mr A travels with you, with your delegation. He meets heads of state on their visits to India. He makes it appear to the world that he is remote-controlling the prime minister,” she alleged.

Referring to a statement by the Adani group in which it had said that short-seller Hindenburg’s report was a calculated attack on India, she said, “The pride of India is not the wealth of one individual, the pride of India lies in the robustness of its institutional structures.”

“Home minister, he has topi pehnau-ed you. He is getting security clearance from your ministry. Finance minister, he has topi pehnau-ed you,” she added.

“This man has been allowed to use LIC and SBI to get money as and when he likes. Honourable civil aviation minister, he has topi pehnau-ed, you. Shipping minister, he has topi pehnau-ed you. Petroleum minister, he has topi pehnau-ed oil PSUs. Power minister, he has topi pehnau-ed you,” she further said.

Budget A “Silent strike On Poor” By Modi Government: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi spotlighted sharp cuts to social security, education, health in the budget

New Delhi:

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said Union Budget 2023-24 is a “silent strike” on the poor by the Modi government and hits at the heart of all far-reaching rights-based legislation enacted during the UPA rule.

In an opinion piece in The Indian Express, Ms Gandhi also made an apparent reference to the allegations against the Adani Group, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers are resorting to loud chants of ‘vishwa guru’ and ‘Amrit Kaal’, even as “financial scandals” erupt over his “favourite and favoured businessman”.

“The prime minister’s policy to benefit his few rich friends at the expense of poor and middle-class Indians has led to continuous disasters — from demonetisation to a badly-designed GST hurting small businesses, to the failed attempt to bring about the three farm laws and the subsequent neglect of agriculture,” Ms Gandhi alleged.

“Destructive” privatisation has handed over priceless national assets to selected private hands cheaply, leading to unemployment, especially for the SCs and STs, she charged.

“Even the hard-earned savings of crores of poor and middle-class Indians are threatened as the government forces trusted public institutions like LIC and SBI to invest in poorly-managed companies owned by its chosen friends,” she said in an apparent reference to the allegations against the Adani Group.

Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after US-based activist short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation, against the Gautam Adani-led group, which has dismissed the allegations as lies.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, have alleged that the meltdown in Adani Group shares is a scam that involves common people’s money as LIC and SBI have invested in them.

“Bereft of ideas, the prime minister and his ministers are resorting to loud chants of ‘vishwaguru’ and ‘Amrit Kaal’, even as financial scandals erupt over the PM’s favourite and favoured businessman. This will be of scant help to crores of vulnerable Indians worried about their livelihoods, savings and futures,” Ms Gandhi said.

It is now the duty of like-minded Indians to join hands, oppose this government’s harmful actions, and together build the change which people long to see, she said in her piece in the English daily.

“In the recently-concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra, yatris walked from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and interacted with lakhs of Indians from all walks of life. The voices they heard expressed deep economic distress and widespread disappointment about the direction in which India is headed,” Ms Gandhi said.

Whether poor or middle class, rural or urban, Indians are being “punished” by the triple menace of price rise, unemployment and falling incomes, she said.

“The 2023-24 budget not only fails to address these critical challenges but also worsens them by slashing allocations meant for the poor and the vulnerable,” the chairperson of the Congress’ parliamentary party said.

“It is a silent strike on the poor by the Modi government, hitting at the heart of all far-reaching rights-based legislations enacted by the UPA government during 2004-14,” the former Congress chief said.

Ms Gandhi said that the promise of independence was of a good life for every Indian, not only to satisfy their basic needs but to have equal opportunities to empower themselves socially, economically, and politically.

The rights-based legislation of the UPA era was a deliberate cohesive step towards this goal, she added.

Rights-based laws empower citizens, and ensure it is the government’s duty to deliver on education, food, work, and nutrition, Ms Gandhi stressed.

She alleged that the prime minister makes no secret of his “dislike” for all this talk of rights.

“He began by ridiculing them in Parliament but was forced to rely on them during COVID-19. With this budget, he has rolled back funding to lows not seen in over a decade,” she said.

Rural labourers will have less work as funding for MGNREGA has been reduced by a third, bringing it below 2018-19 levels, Ms Gandhi pointed out.

“Our schools will be strapped for resources, with funding for the rebranded Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan remaining stagnant for three years in a row. Children will have less nutritious meals, as funding for mid-day meals in schools has fallen by a tenth this year,” the former Congress chief said.

This deadly combination of insufficient funding and rising inflation directly hurts the nation’s poorest and most disadvantaged, she opined.

“As expected, there has been total silence from the Prime Minister on why this attack on social schemes was needed during this crisis. Reading between the lines, we understand that the rationale is to fund capital expenditure, which the budget has sharply increased,” she said.

Experts have raised doubts about the credibility of the figures, whether the funding can be well spent, and are wary that a large portion of the funding may reach only the government’s friends and cronies, Ms Gandhi said.

However, even setting these doubts aside, there is a larger point — funding infrastructure at the expense of human development is a mistake, both in the short term and long term, the Congress leader argued.

In the long term, history teaches us that a healthy and educated population is the foundation for prosperity, Ms Gandhi stressed.

Ms Gandhi said that sharp cuts to social security, education, nutrition and health hurt the poorest today, and stunt the country’s progress tomorrow.

Boost for small investors: PM Modi unveils scheme on government bonds | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underlined the need for ease of investment, trust in the system and convenience for the common man along with financial inclusion and ease of access as he unveiled a scheme that allows retail investors to buy government bonds from a dedicated RBI platform.
PM Modi, who also launched an integrated ombudsman scheme, underlined the need for a strong banking system, while listing out several initiatives by the government and Reserve Bank of India, including a clean-up of the books of banks.
“With the RBI Retail Direct Scheme, small investors now have a medium through which they can safely invest in government securities. The Integrated Ombudsman Scheme has led to the ‘One Nation, One Ombudsman’ system taking shape in the country,” he said, adding that the investment will also help the government undertake development work.
The PM complimented RBI and the finance ministry for steps taken and said reforms initiated in recent years have resulted in greater inclusion. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said a coordinated effort by the finance ministry and RBI has led to a recovery post Covid-19.
She said the Retail Direct Scheme will facilitate retail participation, deepen the bond market and allow for a fair market determined rates for all the across the yield curve.
“The retail participation has been hesitant all these years, because of the cost involved and because of the traditional intermediary system which has prevailed. Now this will probably bring in a direct cost free, convenience driven, and also build confidence in the retail participation in the government securities,” she said.
Modi said that financial services – from banking to pension and insurance — used to be like an exclusive club in India till six-seven years ago, but are now accessible to common citizens, poor families, farmers, small traders-businessmen, women, Dalits, deprived and backward.
“Those who had the responsibility of taking these facilities to the poor never paid any attention to it. Rather, various excuses were made for not changing. It was said that there is no bank branch, no staff, no internet, no awareness, no idea what the arguments were,” he said while criticising the earlier government.
Soon after taking charge, the Modi government had launched the Jan Dhan scheme which was followed by group health and life insurance schemes. Besides, he said, last mile financial inclusion was possible due to digital empowerment. While pointing to the spread of UPI, the PM said digital transactions have shot up 19 times in seven years. “Today, 24 hours, seven days and 12 months, our banking system is operational in the country. We have seen its benefits during Covid times.”
He called upon policymakers to strengthen trust and confidence of investors in the financial market. “We have to keep the needs of the citizens of the country at the centre and keep on strengthening the trust of the investors. I am confident that RBI will continue to strengthen India’s new identity as a sensitive and investor-friendly destination,” the PM said.
